Classic game ruined by a shoddy port job.

Now, first of all, I thought Hexen on the PC was a great game. I bought the PSX version because it was there on the shelves (Hexen on PC is pretty rare). Doom on the PSX was freakin' awesome because it had so many great exclusive features (new music, both games in 1, enhanced lighting etc) and I thought this could be just as good. I will go over the decent things first.

In terms of content, apart from a multiplayer, this port has all the levels, weapons, enemies etc. No problems in this category. Combat is pretty much exactly the same too. Each of the 3 playable characters are all there and fighting generally works quite well, but, like in the GS review, sometimes you can hit enemies with melee weapons from what seems like 8 feet away. Then again, you can use this to your advantage.

The graphics are pretty good- they look similar to the PC or Saturn and all the lighting, textures etc are there. Enemies are 2D sprites like Doom or Duke Nukem 3D and they don't look so impressive but then again, any 2D sprite monster doesn't. I don't find this a problem though, I mean all old FPS's were like this. The sound and music is great and it's all there. No issues in this genre either.

The problems are just stupid ones, ones which could've easily been solved if the developers had spent more time. The main issue is the frame-rate, which runs at, on average, maybe 20 FPS (not great). In large areas the game slows down dramatically. The PSX SHOULD run this game just as smooth as the PC version but sadly, it just doesn't. Another problem is the damn save system. The game takes up 15 blocks- that's a WHOLE memory card! Fortunately, I had 2 cards but the developers could've at least added a password system for those who didn't want to buy a whole new memory card.

Apart from those 2, STUPID issues, Hexen on the PSX is a good game. Like I said before, it does stay close to the PC version, not missing anything in contnet unlike some of the old Doom console ports. I wouldn't say skip it as such, but the PC version is an awful lot better.
