One of the best Half-Life series games, raising the standard of intensity and depth to be expected of in an action game

User Rating: 9.5 | Half-Life 2: Episode Two PC
Half Life 2: Episode 2 may be considered an outdated game by now, but it really isn't and should be considered a landmark first person shooter in all gaming history. I've been through my share of shooters, having great fondness for the original Half-Life. What is ironic is that while Half-Life 2 was decent, I actually hated Episode 1 for its tendency like Half-Life 2 to be repetitive and some times boring, but while also taking away the unique adventure that Half-Life 2 offered.

Episode 2 is a different story. Not only is it an expansion to one of the best shooter series in history, it tops both Half-Life 2 releases combined. It features slightly better graphics, a more involved story line, faster and tougher enemies, more turning points, and of course G-Man's appearance, but this time half way through the game when you least expect it.

I loved the game simply because it keeps the game play refreshing, and the increased difficulty made it even more rewarding to finish the game. I could tell you, for one, I probably made more saves than in the original Half-Life 2, all in an episode that took me 4-5 hours according to my Steam log, compared to the original game which took at least twice as long. The last battle is one you will never forget, making you juggle with a few new tactics you've probably never used much before in the series. More than usual does the game force you to save when you heal up, kill an enemy, or simply make it across the field or cave (oh, you WILL see what I mean by cave) to safety.

The only problem with the game: a disturbing yet disappointing ending. I was just as shocked as any other Half-Life ending, but it doesn't conclude any thing enough to make me feel satisfied. I guess the whole HL2 series has these cliff-hanger endings, but knowing Episode 3 or Half-Life 3 won't be out for quite a long time, I feel extra lost. I'm happy Episode 2 made up for the faults of Episode 1, and hope for the best in the next Freeman episode. I highly recommend this game for any shooter fan, but I advise playing the first three Half-Life games before hard to understand the story and characters. Good job valve!
