The stunning visuals, entertaining gameplay and enriched sound scheme make God of War one of the best games ever

User Rating: 9.4 | God of War (Greatest Hits) PS2
God of War places you in a breath taking interpretation of Ancient Greece, commanding a lone Spartan hero named Kratos. To say the least Kratos is not your average hero. Through out the game you will be taking advantage of Kratos’ bad demeanour by ripping apart enemies, killing civilians and taking heads off dead men. These gruelling elements are not simply inserted into game, they are part of the big picture, which is to do the impossible and kill the God of War.

The visuals are absolutely superb from start to finish; God of War pushes the PS2’s graphical capabilities to their maximum. There is very little difference between the cinematics and the actual gameplay. The world in which you walk in looks very real and well light. The same can be said about the background. It almost makes you want to be able to explore the world instead of just going through the story. Every enemy you face looks incredibly detailed and the blood spatter effects are down to a key.

The gameplay is also just as good as the visuals. The game provides a good balance between fighting and puzzle solving, not making either one too long. The fighting mechanic is simple to learn, but may take a while to master. Though there is a lot of simple slashing in the game, there is also a small in game mini-game system, which can provide the player with valuable health or magic restoration. The puzzles themselves are not too complicated; though they provide a challenge, they will not stump you for hours.

The sound in the game matches both the visuals and gameplay. Every slash is synchronized and sounds like it should. Many enemies growl and taunt you, while you are growling and taunting back. The voice acting is done very well and all the voices sound as if they belong to the characters. Footsteps match the movement of the character and the environments. The environments themselves are filled with sound as well.

Unfortunately, the value of the game is not as high as the other three elements. The game has four difficulty settings and a bonus ten-stage challenge. The game itself is not long, but all the difficulty settings and bonus challenge should take about 30-40 hours to beat or more. The unlockables are entertaining, but there could have been a few more.

Simply saying God of War is one of the best games ever and if you’re looking for a good quality action adventure game then this is a great title to pick up.
