1. Shortcut through World 3-Stage 1

   This is very difficult to do, especially when you don't use an emulator so you don't have save states. Get to the first drop that you will have to fall into the hole. If you have an emulator, use a save state. These leaves won't hurt you when you touch them, but they will make you bounce off of them. If you time a jump right so you hit the leaf at the perfect angle, you could make this jump which you're not supposed to be able to make. Keep going to the right and do this over any big gaps and you will reach the end of this level in no time at all.
   
   This trick is also much easier to achieve, without the need of savestates, if you managed to keep one of the bubble items acquired in stage 1-1: simply use the bubble to fly above the pit.

2. Extra lives

   An extra life is earnt every 50000 points. Over the course of the game if you pick up all the cheese and find all the secret places, granted that you don't use a continue which resets your score, you should earn 2-3 lives.
   
   The following trick can also quickly and easily build up your score and earn extra lives, up to the maximum of 9: in world 1-2, stand next to one of the crabs which stand still and only hides in its shell when hit. You can simply stand next to the crab and keep hitting him for 200 points per hit, it takes a minute to earn an extra life.
   This can also be achieved in world 3-2 by using the cup item to shoot at flames, though only for 100 points per hit.
