WWE Money In The Bank: 13 Facts About The PPV And Ladder Match

WWE's Money in the Bankladder match is a great way to push untested talent as it tends to protect other WWE superstars that are involved in the bout. Often times, the winner is the superstar who is luck enough to be at the right place at the right time, and it's almost never the wrestler who dominated from start to finish.
The soon-to-be-defeated champion is protected as well; anyone can lose to a cash-in, especially if he or she is barely conscious in the first place. At every step, the burden is on the briefcase winners to prove themselves worthy. And even after winning, the winners have to retain and dominate to be considered worthy champions who have lived up to WWE's high expectations.
Here are the biggest winners and losers in WWE Money in the Bank history. These are the superstars who participated the most, won the most, failed at cashing in, and lost the title the quickest after winning it.

1. Most Frequent Participants
Kane and Kofi Kingston have each competed in the Money in the Bank ladder match seven times, more than any other WWE Superstar. Kane won the match in 2010; Kingston has never won it. Neither man is scheduled for the 2019 Money in the Bank ladder match on May 19.
2. Multi-Time Winners
CM Punk and Carmella have both won the briefcase twice. Carmella's second win was a rematch on Smackdown, a little over a week after her first win at Money in the Bank (2017). CM Punk won the briefcase at Wrestlemania XXIV and again at WrestleMania XXV the following year.
3. Cash-In Successes
Winning the briefcase gives the recipient high odds of capturing a title. Cashing in has an 81% success rate. The rate has dropped in recent years, however. Starting in 2012, the year John Cena became the first wrestler to fail in his cash-in attempt, the success rate has dropped to 64%.
4. Cash-In Failures
Four different WWE Superstars have failed their cash-in attempts on four different occasions. John Cena won his match against CM Punk in 2012, but it was due to disqualification, so the title did not switch hands. Damien Sandow lost his match against John Cena by pinfall in 2013. Baron Corbin lost his match against Jinder Mahal by pinfall in 2017. And Braun Strowman fought Roman Reigns to a no contest in 2018, which also meant there was no title change.
5. Briefcase Defenders
There have been six briefcase matches, during which the Money in the Bank winner put up his briefcase as the prize for winning. Five of these briefcase defenses were successful. The most recent defense was by Braun Strowman, who retained his briefcase against Kevin Owens at Summerslam (2018). Dolph Ziggler defended his briefcase on two separate occasions in 2012 and won both matches.
6. Briefcase Loser
The only man to lose his briefcase prior to cashing it in was Mr. Kennedy, who won the briefcase at Wrestlemania 23. Edge then won the briefcase from Kennedy on an episode of Raw and would later cash it in on The Undertaker to win the World Heavyweight Championship in 2007.
7. Quickest Cash-Ins
Three WWE Superstars cashed in the briefcase the same night they won it: Kane in 2010, Dean Ambrose in 2016, and Alexa Bliss in 2018. Kane has the quickest turnaround between winning the briefcase and cashing it; he only took 49 minutes in total.
8. Delayed Cash-Ins
The WWE Superstar who held onto the briefcase for the longest amount of time before cashing it in was Carmella, who held it for 287 days before cashing it in on Charlotte Flair on the Smackdown after Wrestlemania 34. Prior to her, the most delayed cash-in was inaugural winner Edge, who cashed in on John Cena at New Year's Resolution (2006) after 280 days.
9. Cash-in Victim
The world champion who has been most frequently cashed in on is John Cena; he has endured three separate attempts, and he is 1-2 in those matches. He lost his WWE Championship to Edge in 2006, and lost the WWE Championship again to Rob Van Dam the same year. Damien Sandow cashed in on Cena in 2013, but lost by pinfall.
10. Sneak Attackers
Out of the 21 Money in the Bank briefcase cash-ins in WWE history, 18 cash-ins--86% of them--came after a sneak attack, or after the defending champion had already fought a grueling match. The success rate for these "dirty" cash-ins is 89%.
Only three cash-ins have been completely "clean": Rob Van Dam's in 2006, John Cena's in 2012, and Braun Strowman's in 2018. Of those three, only Rob Van Dam captured his intended title. In other words, it doesn't pay for the briefcase winner to be nice.
11. Beginner's Luck
There were 70 different participants in 22 Money in the Bank ladder matches. 20 different WWE Superstars have won the briefcase. And of those, 13 of them--65%--won it in their Money in the Bank ladder match debut.
12. Longest Subsequent Title Run
Seth Rollins had the most successful post-cash-in championship run out of everyone; he held the WWE Championship for 219 days. The Miz had the second most successful post-cash-in run, which lasted 160 days.
13. Shortest Subsequent Title Run
The WWE Superstar with the least successful post-cash-in title run was Edge, who held the WWE Championship for only 21 days.
