There's an optional media update on the marketplace that you have to download to play them.

I think there was an optional media update available on Marketplace. Can't remember for certain, as it's one of those things you setup once then forget about!

I also had to get WMP11 and Zune or something on my PC in order for the streaming to work properly

I think it's under the support section if there is one or try add-ons, not 100% sure. I had it come up as a needed update so I didn't have to search for it.

You may need to update your computer with the essential codecs before it will work. I got the Optimal Update a couple weeks ago and it worked then. Of course I have all the codecs on my computer, too.

it's possible that since it's converted that something went wrong. try using a fresh avi file and try it again. and what are you trying to play it off of? i find using a flash drive works better than discs. also, you may need to be on xbox live before it will play the file. Mine acts like that, even though i downloaded the media update, unless im actually signed on to live, it wont let me play avi files.

FYI, you can play AVI files on the Xbox 360 without a codec if you are watching the video from a portable device (USB). However, I did not know about this codec you guys are talking about so I'm going to go download it, lol.

yea, just try to play the video and it should ask you to update.
