The answer is that Tuesday is traditionaly the slowest retail day of the week. In order to help boost daily retail numbers it helps the store maintain a healthy sales level throughout the slow time of the week, and allows the retailer time to prepare a suitable stock for the high retail days of Fri/Sat/Sun/.
Here in England, the only game we got/are getting on a Tuesday are Halo 3 and GTA 4 respectively, and they were both to coincide with the US launches. Other than that we always get our games on a Friday which is much more convenient but its normally the Friday after its out in the US. Grrr.
I think it is only the US that ship on a Tuesday - here in the UK we always get new things released on Fridays. I think Friday is better for games, as you are just starting the weekend.
All new movies and games are released on Tuesdays. There are a very few exceptions for special editions and such of course - or sometimes a releas coinciding with holidays.

This allows distributors to gain the extra time of the weekend to get shipments distributed country wide - and then gives the actual retail chains a dy to organize their recieved merchandise and to get it delivered to the individual stores. That's why usually on Tuesday's you'll see the employees actually unpacking the boxes and putting the stuff on the shelf.

Do you guys just make up answers? Basically, the reason new DVDs, CDs and Video Games are released on Tuesdays is that rental figures and music charts are released on Mondays. It only makes sense that the studios/game companies/record companies would make their releases the next day, allowing a full week to maximize the numbers that are posted the following monday.

It isn't limited to video games. The same can be said for DVD & Music releases as well.

So if it comes out on Tuesday, you can't play it all weekend? I don't understand that logic. You buy it on Tuesday and get burnt out by Thursday obviously... It actually doesn't make any sense to me either.
EDIT: And Tuesday releases used to bother me when I went to Sylvan. I was in school from 8 to 3 and then I had to go to Sylvan on Tuesdays at like 6 P.M. so I wasn't able to buy the game until roughly 8ish. 8th grade was lame only because of that. Thank god I passed that back in 04.
