I haven't spent enough time with Halo 2 or Halo Wars to rank, but here I go with the others:
Halo 3
The single player had a less compelling story, but the gameplay and variety was the best. The multiplayer was fantastically balanced, incorperated lots of playlists with both a competitive and party game focus, introduced Forge, and was the first game to have a Theater Mode for replays.
Halo 4
The single player was actually very good. 343 surprised me. However, the big surprise was multiplayer. I feared the loadout system, hoping they weren't taking it down the same path as Call of Duty and Battlefield. But on the contrary, it kept a surprising amount of the weapon balance we are used to while incorperating more multiplayer variety (sacrificing pure competition, though).
Halo
Halo: Combat Evolved was a huge step forwards for FPSs and gaming in general, but compared to later entries, it isn't nearly as strong. Namely, the weapon selection was improved. Some lamented the loss of the Assault Rifle back when Halo 2 was released, but the Battle Rifle changed Halo forever (for the better).
Halo ODST
This is the odd one out. It was short. It was strange and new. It didn't have competitive multiplayer, and Firefight didn't have matchmaking. But what it did have was a new perspective on a huge event in the series. I enjoyed the lonely walks around darkened New Mombasa. Maybe it shouldn't have been sold for $60, but the game was still good.
Halo Reach
Eugh. I still put many hours in the multiplayer of this one, but it simply wasn't very good. It had the weapon balance, but the single player was lacking. It was interesting "knowing the end at the beginning," but it never had impact because the game did a poor job of making me care about the other Spartans I was fighting with. The weapon recoil was a BAD idea. I didn't like it that Bungie put out a bunch of maps all made in Forge World with the identical blue/green/gray color scheme. (It seems nitpicky, but after 60 hours on the same colored maps, it gets wearying.) The disc was still packed with content, as 3 and 4 also were, but none of it was as compelling as the others.
