Well, he's probably the best horse you'll get in the game. Though its up too you. He was free when you got him and unless you got the gold for a black or white horse, I don't know what to tell you. You might want to, it makes quick travel and getting around the landscape alot quicker.

He will return to Fort Faragut (NE of Cheyhindal) where you first got him, same as all the other horses you buy will work their way back to the stable where you bought them.

I lost shadowmere too. Problem is, I just kept playing and was forced to go with a slow horse. But I lived through it.

Shadowmere is bar far the best horse in the game. There's not even the slightest contest here. Sometimes, she will wander back to Ft. Farragut (as someone mentioned), which is not far east of Cheydinhal. Of course, if you already have Shadowmere, you should just be able to fast-travel to the fort. Also, try fast travelling to any city, and checking the stables there. Sometimes that can re-synch you with your horse.

That's not helpful. Shadowmere is way better than a regular black horse.
