how do you keep your old shephard?

I just finished Mass Effect for the first time and want to play it again. I know that you can keep your original Shepard in the second playthrough, but will the original one be deleted if you make a new one for the second playthrough? I would like to play through next time as an adept (I played first as a soldier), then play through a third time as my first Shepard to get some achievements.eab444

Yes you can, I've finished it 5 times, 4 times to get level 60 and the other to finish my Engineer.

You click new game and the character should be there, just select him and the game will start.
