You should get an email like 2weeks before it expires. I think they also send you a message over xbl.(not sure though)
Just check your info on the 360 guide under subscription or something. I think it only tells the month and not the exact day. The email should give you the exact day.
From Dashboard go all the way to the right to settings, then on the bottom left click account. Once under account scroll over once and it will say Your Memberships and should show xbox live gold there, click that. It will tell you when you signed up, what your end date is and what kind of subscription you used to sign up such as a 3 month card, etc.
