not similar at all, IMO. Dead Space better captures the "survival horro" genre better than the current two iterations of Resident Evil. Dead Space is more akin to the RE series prior to 4 and 5, which i think can now be considered actions games, not survival horror.
Ive not heard anybody say bad things about Dead Space which is a first because every other game has recieved somesort of negative feedback but not Dead Space, anyone disagree?
I played both, and i prefer RE4. Dead space is a good game also. Did you play Bioshock or saw the Alen movie? Well, Dead space is an amalgam of that three concepts. You should try it.
The difference between RE4 and DS is that your protagonist is mute and you just take orders from the other characters .The missions are also repetitive and mundane.Other than that everything was great and it was a good game.
RE 5 (which is similar to 4...right?) controls like diarrhea and has slow zombies. Dead Space controls like one would think it would and has crazy deformed bodies running at you. They are similar I guess; since there's over the shoulder shooting and reanimated corpses, but I'd have to say that they over complicate controls in Resident Evil. I'd recommend Dead Space; it's very fun.
Dead Space is what resident evil should've been, the pacing is dead space is great and the combat is great. It's the best survival horror game since RE2 and Code Veronica.

though i agree with your post the missions in dead space can get boring, but the combat and the variety of enemies aswell as the inventory implementation makes DS the direction RE should have gone.. capcom may say that their controls are classic for resident evil series, and they are... but that doesn't cover up the fact that all resident evil games have had horrid controls, your character played like a tank
if you liked RE4, you're gonna LOVE Dead Space. the aiming system is similar. and when you smash crates, little things attack you. kinda like in RE4 with the snakes in the boxes. but Dead Space is one of my favorite games to date and one of my best purchases this year :D
