360-Slim Hard Drive Question

My sister got my nephew one of the 4GB slims but he needs more space so a couple days ago she got a 250GB hard drive for it...

She told me it's for Christmas and he won't get it until then...I told her that's probably not the best idea because of the current 'games with gold' thing going on...

My question: Could I insert the hard drive every couple of weeks and download the newest free games so that she can still give it to him as a gift on Christmas without having him miss out on all those free games?

I figure that would make it an even better gift, too...a bunch more space plus like 8 games...
