Chris Benoit is currently my favorite wrestler and is obviously my favorite World Champion in recent memory (and one of my favorite World Champions period).
yeah, Benoit being champ was a gret moment. Also I liked Randy Orton for some reason. He may not really deserved it but something about him made me like him as a champ.
I'll define "recent" as being as early as the name change from WWF-WWE.
World Heavyweight Champion: Batista (Wrestlemania XXI to present) narrowly edges out Benoit (Wrestlemania XX- Summerslam 2004). Benoit's actual Title victory was better, but his reign was so dominated by Triple H that he falls behind Batista, who has scored three rewarding victories over Triple H and has been doing a good job with the belt.
WWE Champion: Kurt Angle's (Vengeance 2003 to September 2003) emotional return and Title victory just months after major neck surgery was inspiring. His feud with Brock Lesnar hit a new level. Runner up: Eddie Guerrero's shocking WWE Title victory and he had some great defenses, the stain on his run was, of course, JBL and Eddie's nervous breakdown cut short a promising reign.
WWE United States Champion: Eddie Guerrero (Vengeance 2003 - No Mercy 2003), the first WWE US Champ is still the best. He was a great choice to be the first US Champ and his Fatal 4-Way defense at Summerslam 2003 against Rhyno, Benoit and Tajiri really made that title seem important.
Intercontinental Champion: Rob Van Dam's (3 reigns between Wrestlemania X-8 and Unforgiven 2002) individual might be unremarkable, but the body of work RVD had in the summer of 2002 was one of the best periods for the Intercontinental Championship in a long while as RVD had terrific defenses against future World Champions Chris Benoit, Brock Lesnar and Eddie Guerrero, while also retiring both the European and Hadcore titles in matches against Jeff Hardy and an awesome battle with Tommy Dreamer respectively. RVD delivered several MOTY contenders in this summer run and helped returning stars like Eddie and Benoit get on track.
World Tag Team Titles: RVD and Kane (March-April 2003 - Bad Blood 2003) both deserved to be elsewhere, but it was fun while it lasted.
WWE Tag Team Titles: RVD and Rey Mysterio (December 2004 - January 2005) both deserved better, but gelled into an awesome team and made the Tag Titles exciting and important for like a full 30 seconds.
In recent history, I'd have to say Chris Benoit. He's one of my favorite wrestlers and it was awesome to see him win the gold at Wrestlemania XX, the only thing I don't like from his title reign is that he lost it to Randy Orton.
Chris Benoit finally gaining the WWE Heavyweight Championship thats a good one right there hes one of the few in recent memory that actually deserved it
