Here is a place to ask about anything stargate related. any questions to do with the technical side of the program. eg ships, weaponary, space etc. Hopefully myself, other officers and recruits will be able to provide you with all the answers.

well i'll start of not with a question but an answer to do with the most important aspect of the program the gate itself and the wormhole.

the gate acts as a portal between to point in the galaxy. (i think everyone knows that). there are many theorytical types of wormholes and the stargate is an example of an intra-universe wormhole, other types inculde wormhole which allow time travel and also connect from one universe to another (obviously this is currently all theoritical beacuse to open a wormhole scientists say u need exotic matter which is a theoretical substance which has negative energy density)

Here is a picture which illustrates how wormholes are formed. Hyperspace travel is sort of semi-wormhole travel, the ship will engage its hyperspace engines which create a very weak wormhole so you dont actually jump to another place but infact travel very fast.

back in "zero hour" sam said that the tainted zpm was not powerful enough to destroy earth but the entire solar system is used in combination with the ancient chair or to power a wormhole to the pegasus galaxy. ( i always thought its potential danger ( the entire solar system?! ) was overrated but i went along with it.

I belive it is for going to a further glaxy.  And I can't spell worth a **** lol.  I think Carter said it was like dialing a area code before the phone number.

And it would make sence that it would make go further

thats what i thought, but i am not sure what the ninth one is used for, i searched on gateworld all it says it 'it is currently not known what the ninth chevron is used for' mjk1

If the eighth chevron is for going somewhere further, than logically the ninth would go even further. shockwave04

I have a question too:

Q: Does anyone know if it is just that a wormhole can only go one what at a time or period?

I am having an argument with a friend about this...I say once all matter has gone throught the wormhole can go in reverse...Like you go through and then you can turn around and go back, because how else can they talk to each other useing the radios.  And they always let the other person talk fully and then talk that would support it a bit...But my friend says once a wormhole is established it only goes from the point it was dialed from to the dialed world.

No, it has been said on the show that wormhole travel is only one way...I just think that it goes one way and then the wormhole can reverse once all is through.

i know that matter can only travel one way so if you dialed a gate address stepped through then materialised on the other side and turned back and went throught thh gate again without stutting the gate down and readiling then you would die, but once the wormhole is established then radio waves can travel both ways not sure about the re'tumjk1

One thing im not sure about though, is that in the episode where O'Neill infiltrates the rogue group who are stealing things from other races, at the end the asgard come to take stuff away and O'Neill walks completely through the gate, but then he is on the other side with one arm in the wormwhole?????afoligno72

What?  It says in the show that it will disconnet after a certain amount of time that nothing is happening with it...

so we are the second evolution of the ancients (altarans), or was that disproven with 'avalon'?  if not then why are we not as advanced or more so than them?
