I like doing one of these cliched threads every year, so here is one more

Mine

2013 - Resogun

2014 - The Evil Within (it wins by default. It was a very weak year)

2015 - Bloodborne

2016 - Dark Souls III

2017 - Horizon: Zero Dawn

2018 - God of War

GOTG - Still Bloodborne

2016: dishonored 2

2017: hzd

2018: rdr2

gotg: genuinely can't pick one but if i go by amount of hours played it'd be dishonored 2

I dunno. My GOTY stuff goes all the way back to say, 1990. Too much work.

But, my top picks are all games that released back in the 90's. For example, I rather play Star Control II than anything from the previous 20 years to the present.

2013: Metro Last Light

2014: Metro Redux

2015: Batman Arkham Knight (worst arkham game yet cant think of any of 2015 game that is good)

2016: Doom

2017: Resident Evil 7

2018: Hitman 2 (because this year suck)

Game of Gen: Doom

That is a lot to think about so I will only list some that I think is a memorable year for me

2008: Persona 4

2010: Mass Effect 2

Absolute GOTG is probably Bloodborne or Persona 3. I only played Bloodborne in 2017 so I didnt put it in the list.

2014 - Divinity: Original Sin (Maybe I’m weird but I never understand why everyone says this was a weak year. 2013 always seemed much weaker)

Runner Up - Final Fantasy XV

2014 - Dark Souls 2

Problem being, 2013 only introduced this generation but the best games were exclusive to the PS360 machines, though they would be re-released later on. And it doesn’t strike me as even to include previous generation games in naming a current GOTG. That said, here’s my list:

2015: Bloodborne

2016: Overwatch

2017: Horizon ZD (still have yet to play SMO)

2018: God of War

It’s been a raucous era for Sony, in retrospect, and if I exclude TLOU to the previous generation, BB takes my top spot.

I rarely play games the year they were released so without going back to check release dates that's hard to say. My game of the gen so far would probably be rdr2 or doom 2016...I had so much mindless fun with doom. I'm not come with rdr2 yet.

2015 - The Witcher 3. Runner up - Bloodborne. Indie - Undertale.

2016 - Titanfall 2. Runner up - Doom. Indie - Stardew Valley.

2017 - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Runner up - Super Mario Odyssey. Indie - Cuphead.

2018 - God of War. Runner up - Red Dead Redemption 2. Indie - Celeste.

Game of the Generation - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Special mentions - Frostpunk, Splatoon 2, Octopath Traveller, Sunset Overdrive, Persona 5, Warhammer: Total War, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Horizon Zero Dawn and Civilization 5.

Overall - Breath of the Wild

My game of this gen: probably Horizon Zero Dawn or Assassin's Creed Odyssey. Odyssey really surprised and impressed me. The Witcher 3 is up there too.

2014 - Divinity: Original Sin or Shadow of mordor

2016: Doom or Civilization VI ( honorable mentions Forza horizon 3 despite performance issues and Deus ex despite shitty ending this was a good year )

2018 - bit of a disappointment but so far is Jurassic world despite a few underwhelming reviews

As for 2013 and 17 cant think of anything. This gen outside 2015-2016 has been underwhelming

Geez, when I think about none of these years were all of that strong except for maybe 2017, which Persona 5 and Super Mario Odyssey were also there. 2015 was so devoid of games that I had to choose a spin-off. A good spin-off, but not necessarily GOTY material. Of the years in this list, only 2013, 2017, and 2018 would even have a second place.

Wow I thought Nintendo made most of the best games this gen but they are hardly mentioned.

I wonder if this means I am now part of yet another protected minority.

I want to take the time to say that I think Horizon Zero Dawn was a solid 9 out of 10 game. It wasn't in my top 10 that year.
