@Motokid6: When we were still watching 32" tube tvs the difference between 1080p and 480p would have been negligible. Tvs are getting bigger and bigger every year so higher resolutions are needed to keep the image looking good.

4K tvs don't make sense for most people. If you're buying a 55" TV, chances are you won't need 4k but at the right distance you could still see a difference. With 75-80" tvs becoming the norm, 4k will make a bigger impact.

I am personally more excited that LG is launching 65 and 75" OLED this year. If that 65" hits $3000 I will be all over it.

I'm not overly surprised. My next TV is likely going to be a 4K, but that'll be in a few months.

The only thing they need to change in order to output 4k is the HDMI port. HDMI 2.0 is surely planned in the revision of the consoles as it's the next standard anyway. It's not rocket science. You don't need to be nostradamus to make the connection.

The stupidity of this forum never ceases to amaze

You didn't read the article, did you? The consoles lack the hardware decoders necessary to stream Netflix and Amazon streaming video. It isn't just a matter of "just change HDMI port to 2.0."

4k Netflix streams look nice in 4k... I have a 55"4k tv next to a 52" 1080p in my game room and the difference between the 2 is like night and day ive tried a few games over both tvs using my pc i52500k with 970s sli and the 1080p set looks like a blurry jaggy mess next to it! I just use my 1080p set for consoles now. but having to upgrade ps4s/ones just to play 4k content is just plain stupid! just get a 4k smart tv that can stream 4k that also has hdmi 2.0 and been done with it cause neither console is gonna be playing graphic intensive games at 4k

It will be a few years until stuff is being broadcast in 4K, so it will be a few years until I have a reason to buy a 4K TV. By then the Slim PS4 and Slim Xbone will be out and they will probably have 4K support.

DisplayPort has high bandwidth...you may be thinking of Dual Link DVI, which isn't even two cables. I don't know of any single display that would use two HDMI cables. Almost all modern HDMI cables support 4k resolutions already.

By the time 4k becomes standard next gen consoles should be out. Most Cable providers don't even support 4K yet.

Most don't? I'm not aware of any that do. None that I know of even broadcast in 1080p let alone 4K, just 720p and 1080i. And I'm talking about native resolution, not scaling. Sure, cable boxes might upscale to 1080p but if any channels through some cable company (Or even over the air) are actually broadcasting at 1080p that's news to me.

Speaking of 4K TVs why is it that every time I hear about a 4K TV with decent specs it has one of those ridiculous curved screens? No way I will ever buy a TV with a curved screen. Been a few times I've been reading about a TV and thought "hey, maybe time to upgrade" and then it says something about a curved screen and that kills it immediately.

Hey everyone, it's your resident PC Gamer here to break even more bad news about consoles.

According to an article released today, a new hardware revision on both the PS4 and Xbox One will be required to output a 4k video signal, whether that is a game or something like Netflix or Amazon streaming video. The issue appears to be that the current potatoes didn't ship with the necessary chip to support Netflix and Amazon’s HEVC 4K UHD streaming format and 4K’s HDCP 2.2 copy protection protocols. In addition, both consoles' HDMI ports would have to be upgraded to HDMI 2.0 to support 4k/60.

This mainly applies to video though, since the consoles would actually have to be capable of rendering 4k games in the first place. As we all know, they already have trouble maintaining 1080p/30 - especially in the case of the Xbox One. 4k is four times the resolution of 1080p.

Better luck next gen.

Source

New versions of both the PS4 and Xbox One will released later this year, Netflix has said.

Chief product officer Neil Hunt told a press conference, as reported by The Huffington Post, that Sony has “promised” a PS4 hardware revision that will increase its maximum video output to 4K.

When contacted for clarification by Forbes, Netflix said that while, according to the site, it “clearly it isn’t in a position to speak definitively on Sony’s plans, [Hunt] believes that when both the PS4 and Xbox One consoles do their traditional two-year hardware refresh (which would be due around October or November) they will add the necessary components to deliver 4K video playback”.

Both Sony and Microsoft declined to comment on the claims, although Sony did say: “Support for high-resolution 4K output for still images and movie content is in consideration, but there are no further details to share at this time.”

Back in 2013 Sony announced a 4K video service for PS4, although nothing has been heard of it since the console’s arrival. Sony Electronics President Phil Molyneux said at the time that while the machine will support 4K video, 4K gaming will not be possible.

Indeed, Sony confirmed to Forbes that that “the PS4 does not currently support 4K output for gaming”.

The site, however, says that both machines would need an additional chip to support Netflix and Amazon’s HEVC 4K UHD streaming format and 4K’s HDCP 2.2 copy protection protocols. Their HDMI ports would also need to be upgraded to HDMI 2.0 if 60fps 4K playback were to be offered.

http://us.hardware.info/reviews/5156/6/amd-a10-7850k-kaveri-review-amds-new-apu-extras-trueaudio-and-new-uvd

Hardware-based support for the brand new H.265 / HEVC codec that will be used for 4K content is not yet a part of UVD, but there's good news in this department. Together with Telestream, AMD has developed HEVC codec that uses HSA that's able to play 4K HEVC content on Kaveri with a very low load on the CPU. It's unclear how and when that codec will become available to consumers, but the fact that the chip is specifically suitable for 4K HEVC is great news if you want to build an HTPC. AMD also wants HSA to be used for Open Source projects, so it wouldn't surprise us if they release an HSA-compatible OpenCL open source H.265 codec

http://fr.slideshare.net/ssuser512d95/final-apu13-philrogerskeynote21

PS4's GPU (with 18 CU GCN) for HSA type work beats AMD Kaveri APU (with 8 CU GCN). PS4's GPU was design with improved GpGPU handling i.e. 8 ACE units.

Notice AMD is using Sony as their reference Ultra HDTV screen...

Or even a $220 card can play battlefield 4 at 60+ FPS.

You could probably game at 4k for around $600 if you were using a 290 for $220.

BattleField 4 at 4K resolution doesn't cross 970's 3.5 GB VRAM issue.

Can we have them do a steady 1080P before we worry about 4k with these machines? Next gen will be out before 4k is relevant.

This isn't a surprise to anybody. Is it? Maybe.

nope is not and considering hardware supported HECV is almost non existent at the moment its obvious new hardware is needed since software rendering HECV is quite cpu intensive ( even on my i5 i see 70-80% usage playing a HECV at 4k ) and impossible not only on consoles but most pc's as well . In fact the only consumer product with native HECV support i can think of is Nvidias GTX 960 ( not even 970 and 980 have a hardware decoder for HECV )

Bummer. In a few years 4K TVs will be the price of regular TVs, and even the cheaper GPUs will be able to handle it.

4K display prices are already starting to drop pretty quick. You can even get super cheap ones with linear upscaling for less that $1000 (less if you go below 50"); and who cares about the upscaling algorithms when you have a 4K source.

...by that time, the current gen of consoles will not even be half-over.

4K is not something Im paying attention to or see my self looking at in the next few years either.

If a PS4 comes out with 4K capabilities... cool... I dont need it, but maybe in 5 -8 years from now it might be something that I would look at.

By then I would assume 4k TV and consoles will be much cheaper (or the PS5 would be out so I'll just get a PS5 then).

Well it won't be used for gaming since PS4 and Xbox One are struggling to output in 720p on some games. As far as video, I'll be ready to stream 4k when I upgrade my gaming laptop. My TV won't be 4k until the price on 4k OLEDs comes down.

Thing about 1080p is I don't think a lot of people realize how sharp that is if the source content is good. About the only thing we've got that is high-quality 1080p is blu ray movies and the problem with those is that older films are grainy because of film stock of the time and newer movies, even those shot digitally, pretty much always have artificial grain added to them because for whatever crazy reason directors/cinematographers have convinced themselves that a movie doesn't look like a movie unless there's some graininess (I personally agree that 24fps is more cinematic cuz I don't know, maybe I'm use to it. But I don't agree that adding artificial grain to a source that is grainless makes it more cinematic at all). I have a few hundred blu ray discs and sadly I've gotten to see what true 1080p without filters to intentionally make it muddy-looking and at a good bitrate looks like only a scant few times. And in those rare instances it really is amazing. Unless you've got cyborg eyes or have your face pressed up to the glass of the screen 4K really doesn't look any better in those instances. And if ya think movies are gonna be sharper on 4k blu ray when it launches at the end of the year I'm thinking that ya should think again. Already 99% of films on 1080p blu ray aren't as sharp as it's capable of because of age or intentional muddying so outside of improved bitrate how can 4K discs look any better when directors/cinematographers have already decided that even 1080p is too sharp of a presentation to be cinematic?

ITT PC Geeks pretend their PC can play games in 4K

PC geeks...but you have a 5820k and SLI 970s?

Righhttttt.

SLI 970's? WTF

Single 970, and I have a Xeon X5660 CPU, not a 5820K.

Check the benchmarks:

Top Gamespot PC Benchmark Scores

I have the 2nd best Single GPU score in 3DMark, best single GPU score in Catzilla, 2nd best single GPU score in CloudGate, best single GPU score in Skydiver,

If that Strix were yours, you'd know a 970 could be gaming in 4k too.... 970 can average over 60 fps in Battlefield 4 at 4k

Or even a $220 card can play battlefield 4 at 60+ FPS.

You could probably game at 4k for around $600 if you were using a 290 for $220.

Medium Settings on a LCD Display, LMAO.

Ill stick to Ultra @ 1080p with lots of AA on a Superior Plasma Display

I have a 60" hu8550 4K samsung, the thing is a beast for picture quality. I'm pretty pissed that a new hardware revision is required, but then again, the TV already has a plex app and netflix app. In one swoop my TV apps have almost completely taken away all of my console's media features. I literally only use the consoles for games now. Plus the TV has similar features to kinect so ... if they can't output games at that res (which we know they can't even all do 1080p fully) then I guess it's not so bad.

Still, it's a disappointment that they were so short sighted after only one year on the market.
