So the microsoft defends team is still in full force...

Sony have been praised by several developers for their decision to include of 8GB of GDDR5 RAM in their upcoming next generation console, the PlayStation 4.  The faster memory apparently gives more budget to developers to render out high resolution textures and free up other resources. Microsoft opted for 8GB DDR3 RAM for the Xbox One but according to them the on board ESRAM will provide the right balance of bandwidth and power.

According to Nick Baker, who looks after the Xbox Ones architecture team believes that GDDR5 is uncomfortable to work with and ESRAM gives the Xbox One the right balance for bandwidth and power consumption.

In their interview with Digital Foundary the Xbox One architect used the word balance 25 times.

Sony wouldnt have spent the extra money on GDDR5 unless it was better.

Probably because Xbox One has DDR3, so it has the best of both worlds. Also the 360 used ESRAM, so dev's are probably used to it.

I know sod all about games programming, so excuse my ignorance; but surely it would be easier for a game to simply use a single unified piece of RAM, that is of equal speed, than to have to program so that the small ESRam get's prioritised for the right things?

slipknot0129

Xbox 360 used eDRAM, not eSRAM, quite different, espcially the setup in the Xbox One using eSRAM, they can now swap render targets out from the eSRAM to DDR3 instead of locking render targets all on eDRAM on the Xbox 360, which sounds like it should be a little easier developing on the eSRAM and will provide a big performance boost over eDRAM,but developers are simply gonna have to take a little time getting used to the DME's (Data Move Engines, eSRAM, DDR3 setup) and the architecture of the Xbox One

both consoles are using 100% hardware, thats obvious but doesnt mean your squeezing out 100% efficiency out of them, Sony's design in the PS4 architecture is more straight up and simple and what developers have been used to developing for a little while, im not saying Xbox One architecture is inferior, just more complicated, give both consoles few years and see that efficiency % rise on both

I guess Nick Baker completly forgot about Sony and Mark Cerny touring all over asking developers what exactly they really wanted lol

The bottom line is they both have around the same memory bandwidth. Dev's wont have trouble getting the same memory performance out of both consoles.

Oh well. The Wii U is very power efficient, 75W or something meager.

This has really helped the Wii U to be a top seller. Billions shipped last I heard and it was all down to consumers' desire to save electricity.

Carmack and kojima ....  sorry brah I dont see it in the games.

about Carmack, "He led off by saying that he hadn't done enough head to head benchmarks to make direct comparisons between the consoles.".

And Kojima hasn't said anything either beside the generic multiplat PR of "they are very similar" but he might be talking about architecture. At the end of the day, lem tears will flow....

You say countless ... Either you can't count to even a slow as 10, or you're chatting shit.

I can think of maybe 2 devs claiming GDDR is easier than the Xbox's equivalent. A nameless dev

Yet Mark Cerny's words get treated like the gospel.

because Cerny talks about the PS4 while all MS does is try to convince people that their inferior hardware is somehow better than the PS4's. On top of it the PS4 was made entirely through game developers feedback.

The most important thing for games is the GPU and there is no way in which you can spin that a GPU with 12 CUs is more powerful than one with 18 when both even share the same architecture. On top of it, it has been proven time and time again through real life benchmarks that GDDR5 improves performance by a pretty wide margin over DDR3.

PS4 is more powerful, is smaller, is cheaper and there's nothing MS can do about it.

GDDR5 is uncomfortable to work with? Coming from the man who isn't actively working with it..?
