Poll Would you buy a $600/ 970 GTX/i5 sporting console? (35 votes)

Yeah I love CGI level graphics/4k. 66%
No way I love 720p and WoW.... 34%

With the 970 being so low tdp (same as 7850 thats in ps4) this scenario is not that far fetched...

Would you though buy this machine?

I would without hesitation....I can guess that this kind of setup would cost MORE to make....soo amazing deal and amazing performance....

No, because I don't buy systems for power, and I say this as a PC gamer.

If it was $600, and had a ton of games to justify the price, then sure, I'll buy it, but it won't be for the hardware.

Online fees or not is important to know.
Royalties?
If it uses console game pricing and no online fee, I would be interested. I'd still have a PC (play tons of games) but it'd be worth recommending to people who don't have the time to play many games.

Who makes said console? What exclusive games? Hardware specs are great but need more than that. I don't have a ps4 and it has nothing to do with specs.

Probably not given the other additional costs...

I don't even see the point in getting a 970 GTX unless your YEARs behind already... just wait for the 20nm versions in a few months?... then we maybe onto a winner.

970 4GB = 145w (~£250)
i5 = 84w (~£150)
229w / £400

Bearing in mind the PS4 pulls well under 200 watts and is £350 (RRP) you don't have to think why that would fail. Also Nvidia don't make APUs.

Sure, but there are power consumption/heat issues. Consoles have to consume less than 200 watts of power because of its small design.

Is it me or youre talking about an entire board....

Plus custom Maxwell GPU wouldnt draw so much power....

Heck the supposedly 7850 in the ps4 draws 160w IDLE http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/amd_radeon_hd_7850_and_7870_review,7.html

Try again?

Oh and Sony wouldnt buy that i5 at full UK price....

Your link shows a subjective obtained power consumption for the 7850 as 106 Watts. The same website estimates the power consumption of the reference GTX 970 as 164 Watts [link].

Top quality graphics cards are getting close and Maxwell is a big step forward, but it's still not low enough yet for consoles.

Well, in a way. $400 hardware just doesn't really cut it anymore. Most stuff looks more like it's gen 7.5.

The only thing that's impressed me so far about this gen, is the physic capability has got better, Forza 5s physics are vastly better than FM4s.

But on the other hand, when you're talking about that much money, you may as well get a PC instead of a console that limits what you can do with it, which is my concern about the Steam Box, sounds like PC price with out the PCs freedom.

Yes. but I did so more than a year ago. I bought a GTX770 4GB for my Haswell.

Not that it was a 600$ purchase but if I have'nt already made the money back, I will have soon.

Edit: By scandinavian standards, it was more like 700$ ;)

A lot of people will denounce that $600 pricetag, but will buy it nonetheless, especially since graphics sell. Personally, I would if I had the money, but if I had to choose between buying a console or upgrading my old rig, I'd rather upgrade my old ass rig.

OK, so with a console you are limited by cooling. So a Nvidia GTX 970 pulls in about 280-300W at full wack which means that heat needs to be dealt with. Then your adding in a full blown desktop CPU which if you look at what Apple did with the 2011 models of the Macbook (they use desktop chips in the laptops) you are looking at some toasty temps. So although might I add that for a PC case, this heat output is nothing but if you are trying to lob all this stuff in a case the size of the PS4 then you are going to have a bad time. You will need some serious fans to keep this lot under control which will make it noisy and we all know how little noise people will actually put up with with electronics in their entertainment centres.

At those specs only a handful of games would be 4K, but at 1080p with closed box it would make games like Crysis 3 look child's play.

Have you seen the benchmarks comparisons?

You have any idea of how powerful the 970 is compared to that joke 7850?

Its all matter of cost. Nvidia would easily make a chip for MS/Sony if the console costed $840 to make (like ps3)....

Imagine a $600 xbone with 5 tflops GPU? Who would even bother with the poor PS4?

It would have to release with some fantastic exclusive games. Otherwise I'd just wait for a price drop and spend the money on PC upgrades. I wouldn't be delusional enough to expect 4k from that set-up though but hopefully you're joking. ;)

No for several reasons.

First off I dont buy Intel or nvidia crap

Second a 970 wouldnt give us CGI graphics. We're still 8-10 years from true CGI graphics on 10th generation' consoles. With a 970 the limited onscreen character models might approach CGI, but the world around them would still be a narrow corridor or tunnel.

Third I would not buy it for $600 at launch because history would repeat itself. The console would sell poorly and there would be price cuts in the first year.

We will never see a $600 console again get over it. All gaming will be on the 'cloud' before we see another $600 console.

If your standards are low, yeah. Struggling to get 1080p, struggling to get 60 fps and games still not looking leaps and bounds better than last gen. $400 gets you high end entry level hardware now.

I wasn't even factoring in the need for stuff like a case, a control pad, a bluray drive, a hard drive, a motherboard and ram, a PSU.

Maybe it's you that needs to try again, and like I said Nvidia does not make APUs other than maybe perhaps mobile ARM chips and Intels graphics offering sucks. So what you are asking for does not exist and will probably never exist, it would have to be in a separate CPU and GPU configuration as it stand right now.

AMD and Intel are the only two companies that can make X86/X64 chips because they have an agreement. You would need to wait for Intel to catch up to make worthwhile APUs and Nvidia would have to use something like an ARM chip to be able to make an APU system unless somehow they make an agreement with Intel to use their designs in Intel APUs which seems unlikely.

If I didn't already own a PC then yes.

Here is why. The PS3 was virtually that price on release and it had like 5 games? If it's sporting the GTX 970 and i5, then it will game in 1440p high settings. Most gamers have never experienced this, and trust me there is a huge difference. The awesome thing about gaming at 1440p+ is you don't have to "max out" the settings anymore for crisp visuals. Once you go over 1440p you do not have to adjust the "AA" settings. The real estate is just a big difference. Also, the PC library is ridiculousy large. You pay $600 for a console and you automatically have a backlog of thousands upon thousands of games because those games are compatible with that hardware and more then likely the software.

Nope because that is not why I am a pc gamer.. If this is what gets people to get into a console or vice versa, because it looks better, your part of the problem with this industry..
