@davillain-:
What state are you in and whats the sales tax?
I think $500 will just be acceptable starting next gen, gamers are getting older and have more money to spend.
$800? Lol, no way.
once you start looking in that price range though you come to the realization you can get a PC with better specs for that $800.. if $800 is what its going to start taking to market a new console, then console gaming is dead
£800 would be a suiciadle price point to sell a console. You can look at the 3DO it launched at $699 and never got going in the gaming market.
Also, could you imagine paying $800 for what is basically a 'locked down' PC. The most valuable feature of a PC is complete freedom. I'd pay $800 for a PC weaker than the next PS console. I wouldn't pay that much for a powerful console.
My gut tells me no, an $800 entry would instantly alienate most families and casuals which probably represent a pretty big chunk of console sales. Some hardcore gamers would buy in no matter what, but no matter how good your games are they still won't appeal to everybody.
There is also the issue of status quo, the NES released at about $200 in 1985, the PS4 released at $400 in 2013, nearly 30 years later, people expect their systems somewhere in that price range and such a high price tag would be too off-putting for too many people to go mainstream.
