From a technical standpoint, it seems like a good idea. They keep giving us great games and a better console every year. Kind of like the Ipad or a vehicle does. Sony and Microsoft both have the cash to make this happen and consumers would love a faster console every year. Seems legit. What do you guys think about something like this?

no no no no no no no. im not forking out every other year just to get an incremental power increase half the reason why apple are essentially the biggest ripoffs known in the technology market.I absolutely despise even the thought of this idea if im forking out £3-400 on a machine i want it to last.

That's a terrible idea, phones are NOTHING like consoles. For one they're subsidized and apart from a few nutjobs it's not the same people buying them every year, most people get them every other year when their contract ends and their phone company offers them an upgrade. That's ignoring that it would be a complete pain in the ass for developers.

Who said your console wouldn't last? Who said you would have to buy another console every year? What im saying is a faster one with a few more features would hit the market every year like the Ipad. They all would still play the same games and stuff... Do you know much about Ipads? 99% of the games work for all generations of ipads.

as i've said before no, not to mention the headaches caused by optimization of the console itself because of varying SKU's and power that those SKU's have its just a developmental nightmare for consoles. Consoles are trying to be as simple as possible and thats proven by the fact they are adopting x86 architectures to make porting easier and the systems themselves more accessible to developers, this would only increase dev costs and man hours optimizing the game. The system we currently have is fine and in no way do i want them to take a leaf out of apples book and basically rip us off every other year claiming the next iterations this big revolution and the idiots fall for it.Ipad's are a totally different beast from consoles to even compare them is a complete lulz fest.

game development takes more than a year... by the time your game is released the system you developed it for would be old news.

This is a thought-provoking question, actually.

People are willing to spend full-price for marginally improved phones and tablets almost each year yet they don't want to pay a higher price for a console system which will last them for years.

Gaming may not be at the top of priority lists for the majority of people but still, one would expect atleast the so-called "dedicated gamers" would be more willing to invest in systems they will game on for years...

They do. They release new SKUs, special editions, redesigns, slim lines every year.

It takes elite first party devs 3 or 4 years to max out a console, it takes third party developers about 5 years to max out a console.

At that point consoles would have no reason to exist and might as well just use a PC

It took 4 years to make GTA V. That would be 4 consoles. Rockstar would have to be making adjustements every year to keep up. Same with other games and developers. This is a terrible idea.

I wouldn't mind every two or three years but yearly upgrades is a bit much if consoles want to stay relevant going forward they need to account for cellphones yearly upgrades.

i'd rather it be out every 10 years, every year would make every person bankrupt, not to mention, too few games avaliable and no space to put the 100+ consoles in you're house

10 years? No one wants to be stuck with hardware limitations for that long.

No one would buy them, also they do release every 2-3 years if you count the slimmed and super slimmed versions.

Crappy idea. Consoles would stay the same price and developers would have to target too much hardware

phone and tablet have a way way.... Way bigger market.... would guess about 300million people have cell phones in the US.  About everybody and everyone has use for them.  console sale are 1/10 of that when things go great! So New phones every year makes since and new console every ten years.  If you could convice your mom, aunts, uncles, random women, and people who hate games to buy and play game console then it would make since to make game system more often. imo
