It’s an unfair comparison. Japan is a single country. The west are a lot of countries . You can even include Poland and russia there is you are being very inclusive.

I think mechanics wise Japanese games are really good, but story wise I also find them to be too melodramatic and boring. Maybe I haven’t played the right ones, but I don’t like too emotional stories.

  1. Europe.
  2. Japan.
  3. America.
  4. Asia.
  5. Australia and rest of the world

TBH Japan it depends on year. If its a good year, no.2. If its a bad year is can go as far down as 4th.

I think they both make some fantastic games, they both also make terrible games. So I think you would be better pinning western and eastern dev's against each other that are similar (If there really is any, nothing for me comes to mind though).

Japan was excellent all the way until the end of the PS2 era. They never recovered and the West/Europe has been the best since then.

Japan simply does not have the budget to compete with western/European developers.

We have also seen more Japanese games emulate western games because the west makes better games.

The rest of the world surpassed Japan a long time ago and only ignorant fanboys still think Japan makes better games. Or they are weebs obsessed with Japan.

Simplistic rundown: Japanese games tend to be more concerned with their own engineering and authored content. Western games are more concerned with editing and design due to the outsourcing of its production. Depending on whether they are produced in Europe or other Asian countries, the few studios that were of service might create their own games, target the same market but fail to live up to the others locally. A few exceptions arise, but the international Japanese games are becoming more and more Western like, while new studios beneath the triple-A market will either remain local or mimic the cultural influence of their target.

Arguably the only genre (not JRPG) they still dominate in is fighting games.

They use to be trends setters influencing the West, now it's them copying us.

I am convinced Japan devs don't know how to write a good story or good characters or good rpg or understand good pacing.

They both have great developers. "Best" is subjective. I enjoy games from Japanese developers like Resident Evil (3rd person games), Shenmue, Zelda, etc. I can't stand Japanese anime games.

There are few things western devs do better than Japanese devs. Japanese devs unequivocally produce games with much better/more refined gameplay.

Western devs sometimes fetishize realism and make some elementary gameplay mistakes while pursuing this. This really hurts action games from the west, which tend to replace interesting or fleshed out mechanics with 'qte-like' interactions with enemies, sometimes with many cinematic sequences.

In general, Japanese action and fighting is far superior. Its actually surprising that western devs haven't caught on to the discrepancy after so many years.

Gameplay - Japanese developers are undoubtedly better at gameplay mechanics than Western developers, generally speaking.

Graphics - Western developers clearly have the lead here, generally speaking.

Story - Depends on whether visual novels count. If they count, then Japanese devs write the best stories. If they don't count, then Western devs write better stories.

Music - Japanese developers are undoubtedly better at video game music than Western developers, generally speaking.

Voice acting - Depends on the language. Western games are better in English. Japanese games are better in Japanese. Dubs are almost always inferior to the original voice tracks.

Yeah, I'm going with Japan. At first I was gonna say Western because no games have really reached the graphical quality of games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Uncharted 4 but graphics are only one aspect of the game. I'd say overall Japanese games curbstomp other games in every other category.

There are good and bad in both sides. Overall I'll say western due to having a much bigger output than Japan alone.

What Japanese games can stand up to these games from a graphical standpoint? I prefer Japanese games. They always are stylish and very creative like Persona 5, Nier Automata, and Ni No Kuni 2 but I don't see too many Japanese games that are really pushing the limits of the hardware or winning graphics awards like Horizon Zero Dawn.

Red Dead is just average.

Horizon is really really good. Im yet to play that one. Maybe i will pick a few of these games up as they are cheap. I currently only have a Switch. Maybe one day ill get the ps4 back to try some of these.

From what ive seen from Persona its pretty good. Very well concieved on all fronts. Nier id have to be reminded of, in fact most games ive seen i would have to be as i havent gamed much this gen--but i have seen many of the games if that makes sense. I just dont pay too close attention to what comes out. And dont be mistaken in saying stylish, creative, design, etc; these are the graphics. Pc fanboys will have you think otherwise but good graphics are good graphics.

Why do i say Red Dead is average? Because its downright boring. It looks like copy/pasted photographic textures. Put that up against Uncharted or God of War and youll see how the hand crafted texures really add to the visual design. Its why the image as a whole is so tight, even if slightly lower in fidelity on the output.

Metal Gear Solid 4. That game has great graphics.

Breath of The Wild has great graphics.

Arms has great graphics.

Trying to mimic real world settings, and doing so with photographic like accuracy; that doesnt always mean theyre good graphics. Often times youll see pc games do this, and then the human characters stick out like a sore thumb. Compare games like that to something like Horizon, where every in game object and texture is carefully thought out. Theres no comparison. Venturing off topic a bit yes, but western games that do this tend to be the exception, whereas eastern games tend to exhibit that nature as the norm.

Agree with most of that but I´m not so sure music is that much of a sure win as you think. I´d actually argue the other way around but there´s way to many examples to make a concise point.

Hard to tell really. There is a sea of piss on both sides if we're going to cherry pick. I will say Japanese devs have horror games on lock though. Nothing Western devs have put out will come close to classic RE, Silent Hill, Siren, Clocktower etc. I long for games like these but with modern graphics.

I'm surprised you singled-out music, as that's the one category where I thought Japan had the biggest advantage, as VGM soundtracks and VGM composers from Japan are generally way more famous and respected than Western ones. When you have Nobuo Uematsu being called the "Beethoven of video games" and Yuzo Koshiro widely respected by EDM producers, it's pretty hard to argue that Japan doesn't have a clear win in this category.

RE2 is one of the best-looking games this year. And so were FFXV and MGSV when they came out. PES 19 also looks better than FIFA 19. And GT Sport has better lighting and physics than Forza 7.

Nevertheless, I get your overall point. Japanese AAA games with top-tier graphics are few and far between.

What part of the west are you referring to? The U.S., Europe, or both?

But if you mean the U.S., then it really depends on the year for both countries. Both have top quality studios that have produced quality games. However, depending on the year, both can and have produced lackluster games.

Well that's kinda hard to answer since there are great games from every region and nobody has played all highly praised games from all regions. But for me persoanlly, it'll look somewhat like this: Japan >> Asia >>> Europe > Us >> Rest
