Wait, why are the two being compared? Although Horizon and Zelda are two fairly different games, there's a lot that immediately pits them against one another- they're both open world titles with action adventure and RPG elements. Both are releasing in the same week (within four days of each other, in fact). Both are probably the most hyped games for their respective systems. Both are generally similar enough that this comparison is not out of place.

So what game do you think will be more successful- Zelda, or Horizon? And why?

zelda will definitely be because horrizon is new IP. its basically GG games to take on cinematic action games like uncharted.

zelda will also be better game too.

Zelda by a mile. The percentage of Switch owners that will buy Zelda will be well over 50%. I doubt the percentage of PS4 owners that will buy Horizon will even be at 15% percent.

I really don't know how to answer that question. I suppose we will just have to wait and see how things pan out.

I'm going to guess Zelda for both.

I don't have a lick of hype for Horizon. It hasn't grabbed my attention and I really don't trust Guerrila. I hope it does well, though.

I would say in the short term Zelda will be sell more and be critically received. I do however believe that Horizon will sell better in the long run. It will be close regardless. Both look like fantastic games.

Sonys best exclusive (UC4) has a <20% attach rate, while Nintendo can hit 50% easy. That trend alone should put BotW on top. That is if Nintendo can get enough Switches on shelves.

@jumpaction: And that is the correct answer. If Skyward Sword was good then maybe a clearer guesstimation would be in order.

@Pedro:

I just don't know. I thought The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds was excellent but Breath of the Wild is experimental for the series, so I'm not sure how it will turn out in an industry where open world games have now become so popular.

I also have never played one of Guerrilla Games' works before.

This is a difficult one, historically zelda hasn't been a huge seller, but a new ip is difficult to sell unless it is really outstanding, but I'll say that Zelda will have better scores but it will sell less.

Mediocre/bad zelda games have batted a 90+ for simply being Zelda, so the most bitchin lookin Zelda in a long ass time should do strong critically. And I'm not so sure Guerilla will match them on that front, commercially? Eh, who knows. I doubt a new ip even on the PS4 outsells Zelda, but you never know. I think Zelda will do well, and for my money I have more faith in Zelda than Horizon.

dude, shut the **** up. what do you think will be more successful? one of the biggest and most loved franchises with decades of critically acclaimed games(even when they're bad) or an open world game by the losers that made killzone? like, i get that you gotta damage control as much as you can to pretend like nintendo isn't out of touch but don't be dumb

Horizon will be better but Zelda will probably be more successful because Nintendo games are overrated in general.

@mems_1224: 50 million PS4s vs. 2 million Switches (at most). Horizon has been hyped to hell and back. Zelda is a big step away from the traditional Zelda (at least from LttP up until SS) in a lot of ways.

There is a chance that Horizon can do better than Zelda both commercially and critically.

I'm betting on Zelda because I think Nintendo games, especially for their core franchises, have the best gameplay of any game developer. But let's not sit here and pretend like it's some completely misguided question.

The better question is will I be able to play through enough Horizon to be satisfied by March 3rd because it will inevitably take a back seat to what I hope is the GotG.

You know, I actually started doing the math. Considering 2 million Switch console for March, probably more than half getting Zelda. I'm thinking Horizon would probably pull in a couple million for the first month. But then, how quick is Nintendo going to manufacture more consoles and what would the post-launch demand be? But then it occurred to me, there's some 14 million Wii U consoles out their and most of their owners are probably chomping at the bit for a new, great game to play. So yeah, Zelda by a mile.

@sHaDyCuBe321: I mean, if they sell 2 million switches at launch then that's 2 million copies of Zelda sold. Not to mention the 5 people that own a WiiU. There are more ps4s but Zelda will have a damn near 100% attach rate

@mems_1224: if Horizon even has a 3.8% attach rate it outsells Zelda. And that's IF every Switch bought was bought by an actual gamer and not a reseller AND every one of those gamers buys Zelda.

The more I think about it the less likely it seems that Zelda will outsell Horizon.

Zelda is one of those franchises which people buy a console for. Everyone who buys a Switch will buy Zelda. As for critical acclaim, I don't doubt it will be within 5% on meta.

A 30 year old franchise loved around the world coupled with a new system launch and selling on two systems vs. a new IP, don't think it's hard to guess which will do better...

Zelda would have to monumentally screw up to get bad ratings, like it would have to be a final "surprise" that Link actually talks and his voice is the same from the CD-i games, and even that probably wouldn't greatly affect sales.

there is a surprising lack of hype around horizon. i think it looks great. if i ever get a PS4 this will be high up on my list of to get games...probably. unless the execution turns out to be pants. but its got some interesting ideas there. i just hope the execution is good. even sony dont seem to be really talking about it much.

in terms of sales i think zelda will take it though. its basically the only major game on a new gaming device and zelda games tend to sell well. even the less hyped ones do well.

in terms of the quality of the game. what zelda will do will be executed pretty much to a higher standard than anything else on the market. functionally everything is point to it working very very well. really polished. but it could be a bit too mechanical also. it could end up just doing a few things really really well.

horizon could surprise in the variety of things it tries to do. my main concern there is that guerilla dont have a great track record in the game quality department. they certainly know how to make hardware sing. they made the best looking vita game (and its a great looking game too) and killzone 2 and 3 certainly made the PS3 work up a sweat. but their nuts and bolts game mechanics are sloppy and the last killzone was considered to be very meh. they tend to be too technology driven and that can sting.

horizon is a bit of a dark horse for me for 2017. a lot stacked against it. a developer with a solid, but not a spectacualr, track record. a much more complicated proposition than killzone.

but if i was a betting man i would put my money down on zelda of course. but here hoping for 2 spectacualar games though.

Switch is a joke, but I'm still going with Zelda.

I'm still not sure on Horizon. It could be up there with the best WRPG, or it could be merely "good" if it's too short or something is broken about it.

It's hard to see either being "bad". But Zelda probably has a tighter range where you know it will either be great or REALLY great (if you can get past the hardware limitations). Whereas Horizon has a possibility of being mediocre or unrefined since Geurilla has never made this style of game.

Critically Zelda does amazing even when it doesnt deserve it, so I dont see BoTW changing this.

Commercially is the harder one to predict. PS4 is going to have a much larger install base to the switch, but its a new IP so I cant really tell how well it will do. On the other hand I dont know if the switch will be able to compete being a new system. Im going with Horizon, but it could go either way

I think Horizon will be more successful commercially due to the PS4's huge install base. Zelda is launching on Wii U, which hardly anyone owns, and a new console that so far has nothing to offer to anyone other than the most diehard Nintendo fans. Despite that I think it will be received better critically.

Got to look at the install base, although this proved worthless with U4... I do see it selling a lot since it will be one of the most graphically impressive console games.

Horizon will outsell Zelda to start, but at the end of the cycle Zelda will be #1

That game sold 2.7 million copies in its launch week, and finished with 8 million plus on the year (admittedly boosted by bundles). I'd say that install base did more than enough to sell that game to a lot of people.

Zelda both commercially and critically. Zelda will be mid-90's on aggregate sites, Horizon will be mid-80's. Zelda will sell several million copies, 3-4 million on Wii U and at least 1-2 million in the first year on Switch (although, this is hard to really predict since it's hard to know which system people will pick it for). Horizon will sell 2-3 million total in it's lifetime.

No matter how much hype Horizon gets on the internet from fanboys, Sony exclusives don't ever sell as well as they would let on. Unless it's made by Naughty Dog.

I'm a little worried about both. I don't trust Guerilla to put out an RPG with a compelling narrative, and the recent Zelda footage showed a pretty barren open world that reminded me a lot of MGSV.

I expect Zelda to sell a bit more in the end and be better received though. If Skyward Sword and A Link Between Worlds can get near perfect scores despite their glaring problems just because they're Zelda games, then this scenario wouldn't shock me.

What's Link Between World's glaring problem other than shamelessly using the same overworld as Link to the Past?

It's a little easy and the item system isn't fully realized but the game is really stron in my opinion.
