Visually? Technologically? Made the biggest impact? Personally, I think it's when games went from this:

Yar's Revenge (still a great game)

to this...

So I think going from the Atari, post gaming industry crash, to the 8bit NES era was really the biggest step and made the biggest impact. Personally, the current gen is by far my favorite, but 1983-85 saw quite a change in gaming.

16bit-32bit

there is no denying the impact of that transition of generations we saw a major jump into mainstream entertainment at that time no longer solely for kids video games were starting to appeal to more then just children and games were starting to be marketed to more then just children. The jump in graphics became huge.

Visually, probably 5th gen to 6th gen.

I remember playing MGS2 back in 2001, and being *blown away* (pun intended) by the storm effects on the tanker.

I could say 2d to 3d. But that would be too easy.

The 32/64 bit generation. From 2D sprite based games to full fledged 3D games was quite a breathtaking leap.

the 16bit era to the 32 bit era.

32 bit was the transition into the realms of 3d graphics..

Gameplay: what you said, since NES is the first modern console, the preceeding are ancient in comparison. SMB3 still holds up as an amazing 2D platformer.

Graphics: N64 to GC. Imagine going from, say Perfect Dark to Metroid Prime.

I don't know about that, there were a ton of 3D games before (Doom & Ultima Underworld for example), just not quite as advanced as what came in the period of the 5th generation & onwards. Actually, if we think about this, 3D games have co-existed with 2D games for a extremely long time.

But yaaaa, console wise, what you wrote is 100% correct.

I think it was when we went from only 2D graphics to 3D polygonal graphics.

2D to 3D was probably the biggest change. So generally SNES/Genesis to PS1/N64.

Well honestly, I don't see the PC as even being bound or defined by generations, it's continuous unlike consoles :P

Although it was one of my least favorite gens (mostly because I started college and just didnt have the time) Id say the N64/PS1 gen introduced the defacto standard to how gaming is percieved now. Analog controls-CD format games and the infancy of 3 dimensional gaming in world. It really cant be stated enough how important that generation was even though it wasnt my favorite. Just the concept of gaming alone going from the simple snes-genesis game pad to the Nintendo Z lock controler and the duelshock was crazy...

Biggest leaps

2nd>5th>3rd

The second generation was a whole lot more advanced than the first, the magnavox oddesey, a first gen console for instance relied on overlays, other consoles were made, but many consoles didnt use cartages and only had one game. Meaning one game per console.
The 5th generation really took off the 3d on consoles and a lot of the groundwork for consoles still dephend on the groundwork laid down by games in this era.

From 2D to 3D and it's not even remotely close. It's just as big as the leap from black and white TV to color if not bigger.

16bit to 32bit no doubt! I was shocked with the PSX. 3d Polygonal graphics, Voice acting, CD format, Analog controls, way better audio. Videogames were brought into the mainstream. the 32/64 bit era change gaming in every way possible and was the biggest leap in every catogory. Virtual reality would probably have to be the next leap to overtake that.
