probably never. the screens are too small to take advantage of 720p or higher. the best res for a handheld is 800 x 480.
Er, never. We're just barely fitting 720p inside 10" netbooks, and it hurts a lot of people's eyes.
Also, 720p will continue to be the sweet spot for gaming on consoles for a long time to come. Most TVs sold under 32" are 720p and it will stay that way for the forseeable future...
[QUOTE="cliff122316"] it just isnt necessary for what the benefits would beNidgetWhich leads me to believe Sony will probably do it .... or at least release a handheld claiming to do it  Probably shove a blu ray drive with sixaxis in there too Add in bouncy boob physics = They win
It's the number of those teeny-tiny squares on your TV screen.I know absolutely nothing about "780p" and "1080p" and "Igottap"....

High definition on handhelds are based on the screen's size. A 480 x 270 res on a 3 inch screen is quite similar to 720p on a 17 inch screen.
Blue-Sky
Exactly this.
In fact, so far movies from PSN look better on my PSP than 720p movies do on my Netbook (even with my 720p glossy black screen). The PSP always amazed me for movies.

Fail.
@slipknot0129: Anyway, that won't happen. The screens are too small to get 720p. Maybe the quality of 720p will come around in about ten years or so for handhelds, but other than that, I don't know.

This^^. For example, if handheld "A" had a resolution of800 x 480 and handheld "B" had a resolution of 1280 x 720, you wouldn't really see much of a difference because the screens are usually around 4.3", which as said above is too small to take advantage of 720p.
Doesn't the Zune HD have 720p?Stevo_the_gamer
no. the zune hd has a screen resolution of 480 x 272 (the same as on the psp). the zune hd is capable of outputting a 720p image to an hdtv provided the user purchases a $90 dock. it also allows the zune hd to output dolby digital 5.1 through a toslink cable (optical) whereas the headphone jack only outputs stereo ( 2.0 ).

all for a reasonable $850

lol... because you have a 5.1 surround sound portable sound system to carry with you to Starbucks?

no but there are headphones that have 6 channels (5.1) and there are plenty of songs and albums recorded in surround sound. but the 5.1 output is to listen to surround sound audio tracks from HD movies when you hook the zune up to a tv.
it only took us 20 years or so to go from 8-bit to 1080p. go figure.

ironically, the screen resolutions for hdtv's have existed for 30 years, as did lcd's and hdtv's have been on the market since 1997. hdtv's and their resolutions were invented long before any technology was created to take advantage of them.
It definitely will happen, no idea when though
Some of you underestimate technological advancements in the next 10 years

it's not about underestimating advancements in technology, it's about usefulness. just because you can do something doesn't necessarily mean you should.

Correct. Before the existence of NTSC and PAL, there were experiments on higher television resolutions during the waning days of World War II. However, due to technical limitations, these resolutions were not practical until the last few decades.
One have to remember: something may be advanced and impractical today, but it may be practical in the future. I predict in the next ten to twenty years that there will be a handheld system with 720p or HD-quality screens that will be affordable.

Zune HD
self owned.
had you read the entire thread, you would have seen that i already explained this. the zune hd only has a screen resolution of 480 x 272. it can output a 720p signal to an hdtv provided you buy the $80 th dock. that is the only way to get hd out of it. you could view "hd" videos on the device itself but the the tegra chip downscales it to 480 x 272.

personally, the only way i see high res small screens being useful is it the screen were also auto-stereoscopic. it would lend to the realism of the 3d effect.
