Poll What's an acceptable metacritic score for you to buy a game at launch? (33 votes)

90 or greater 12%
80 or greater 9%
70 or greater 9%
60 or greater 3%
I NEVER buy a game at launch. 3%
Any score. 64%

I know people will say that scores don't matter and yada yada. But if I'm going to buy a game at launch, I'd want at least some reassurance that it's not broken lol. I think for me 70 or greater is acceptable. 60 might be ok too, it really depends. But in practice I've never bought a game at launch with a really bad score unless I got a great deal or I was just blind going in lol. How about you, SW? What's an acceptable metacritic score for you to buy a game at launch?

If it’s a game that I think I’ll enjoy then it doesn’t matter what the score is.

^^ Same as above. I'll definitely check scores, but if I enjoy a game thoroughly, i'm not worried.

If something scores below 6, I'll probably ignore it.

I've never preordered, or even bought a game due to a review score

Scores generally don't play a roll in my purchase decisions. They're opinions. Nothing more.

I only watch first impressions that show how the game performs(framerate) or how the game performs(gameplay). If I like what I see, I buy it, no matter what the score is.

Score doesn't mean much. It certainly hypes me up if a game I wanted also scores well. But I've already made up my mind before the scores drop.

I expect Xbox launch exclusives to get shit on universally.

Anyhow, I will be pre-ordering next console long before any games scored and not letting any launch reviews change that.

I don't really care for Metacritic scores. If I'm truly interested in it, I'll buy it. If I'm on the fence, I'll wait for a sale.

Depends on the game and release timing. Certain games don’t get a reliable metric until well after launch day.

This.

I form my own opinions. If it's a game I am skeptical about however, I will wait for overall reviews.

For me it depends on the familiarity I have with the game and the genre. If its a sequel to a game I already know and love, I dont care about the score. If its a RTS or a top down RPG, I care much less about the score.

But if its a game i dont know much about and in a genre I dont usually play, then I will be need a very high score.

Really good question. I do value reviews and numbers- but I feel most games are overrated these days. This leads to inflated metacritic numbers. I selected 90+ in the poll... but its hard to say. I buy very few games at launch. If im very interested in a game and it hits the 88-89+, I tend to feel pretty good. Below 80... I tend to avoid spending $60

I laugh at anyone who seriously depends, values, or even recognizes journalist reviews.

In the past the only defense was something like "it helps me spend my money wisely cuz I ain't rich!" well now you have plenty of options like previews and demos and all kinds of info before you buy, but some stranger's word shouldn't mean anything to anyone outside of a general opinion.

I only use metacritic to see if the overall score agrees with my opinion. I buy games and play them first and then look at reviews 90% of the time... seeing as though I buy most of my games new or get them in Alpha, Beta, or early access these days the reviews aren't even out yet most of the time.

Typically don’t buy games at launch. Last one was Doom Eternal, which ofc was recent. But before that I think it was AC:Origins?

Anyhow neither was about scores. It was more about trusting the developer, getting hyped by gameplay footage and so on.

I usually go by Steam Reviews.

If it sits on "mixed" or "mostly negative", quickly scroll down to see what is usually up.

They'll occasionally highlight stuff mainstream media ignores, like shitty port quality, or "this is game is VR".

With today's Fake news and reviews; meta and the like are useless and worse, dishonest ministries of propaganda at best. :P

Why would you depend on a score built up from an average of a bunch of people you're not familiar with?

Shouldn't you read the individual reviews?

Review Scores to decide what I want to play? Yikes. I would miss out on way too much. I do my own research to decide what I will like. Scores mean very little.

Perfect example is the FF 7 Remake scores. I found that game to be not fun in the slightest. Now I am playing Trials of Mana and having a FANTASTIC time. Going just by scores rarely tells you what you will have fun with. Personal preferences play a far more significant role.

Yeah, it's a non-factor.

Couldn't imagine MC scores guiding my purchases, it's way too vague. Basically see it like this:

- if the game is 50 or below it likely has issues.

- if the game is 50 or above, could still range anywhere from pure shit to amazing.

With so many mediocre games sitting in the 90s, can't really take that shit seriously.

Userscore probably needs to be 70 or greater for me to look at it. Or let me reverse that. Games I look at will score 70 or higher by users. I rarely ever look at scores before buying a product. I do read some userreviews to see if there are issues when I'm in doubt.

If we're talking about games I REALLY want, metacritic scores don't have any impact on me.

The only times game scores have an impact on me is when I was unsure about the game in the first place.
