Whats a game or series that you prefer the actual story and atmosphere over the gameplay?

For me it's the Silent Hill series I just could never get into the feel for the gameplay but love the lore, story and atmosphere of those games. That's why Shattered Memories is my favorite in the series the winter storm setting and the psychological story draws me into it and there's no combat your just running from the enemies which is fine for me when it comes to this series what about you?

Mass Effect 1. The game aged terribly gameplay wise. Other than that, I loved the story.

The Order: 1886.

The lore and visuals of this game is just spectacular. Loved the Victorian Steampunk setting and the lore of the game is pretty interesting. I really want to know where Galahad is going at the end of the game (america) and the lore around the miracle black water(or something I forgot the name) that grants immortality.

Dreamfall. It had so little gameplay it might as well be a (barely) interactive novel. But the story, music and world building were great.

The Last of Us by a mile. Gameplay wasn't great, but it's probably my favorite narrative I've played through.

Bioshock. The gunplay was weak.

Couldn't agree more that was one of my biggest issues with that game.

Shenmue 1 & 2. They're clunky, slow and graphically outdated, but there's something about their characters having schedules and things to say, voice acted and not just through speech bubbles, who contribute to a feeling of coziness in the first, and a family sense amidst the crowd in a big city by the second, where danger was more welcoming than your homeland peers.

BioShock and Silent Hill are great examples. I'm gonna add Elder Scrolls. Great worlds and lore, but Bethesda needs to work on gameplay and polish.

Then there are games like Inside, which has very light gameplay really. You run, jump and grab some stuff. But it manages to be awesome anyway thanks to the atmosphere.

All of the Halo games and I love the story/atmosphere over the gameplay cause Halo's gameplay is weak and barely changing the formula gameplay-wise.

I'd say the Final Fantasy games I've played. (Which have only been VII & X.)

There's nothing wrong with the gameplay at all & I love turn-based combat, but I think most people play FF games for the story & atmosphere alone.

Pretty much all modern games since they generally value graphics over gameplay.

I have to agree with Lundy. The first Mass Effect's controls didn't age well. Granted, I started on the second for PS3 and immediately moved on to the third. Only after that did I go back to the first as it became available to PS3 players after the third released.

Hoping to see a remaster of the trilogy for next gen.

The Last of Us. I just put it on easy mode and ran to the next cut scene.

Red Dead Redemption 2. I think I just don't like those types of controls in 2019. I don't like GTA with a controller anymore either. Hopefully I can get through RDR2 when it comes out on PC.

Coincidentally, I just re-bought my answer on yet another platform a few days ago: “Deadly Premonition.” In all its various re-releases, they have yet to include an option to go full Visual Novel.

Gothic has terrible controls, UI, combat etc...

But it's immersive as hell once you tune in to it.

I'd probably put Metroid Prime in that category. The gameplay is not terribly interesting but 1 and 2 do a really good job of capturing the feeling of being alone on a hostile alien world.
