What next Rare game should be to become a hit?

With the current video game industry and market being what it is, what should the next Rare game be in order to become a hit?

I don't think anything is guaranteed at this point, however it is also worth pointing out that some key people from their golden era still remained, like Gregg Mayles who was main designer for Donkey Kong Country, Battletoads, Banjo-Kazooie and Conker.

BTW Microsoft gave Rare a huge degree of freedom with lots of bold titles last gen, like Viva Pinata, Kameo, and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. Of course most of them didn't sell that well, and that's why MS has been very cautious ever since. They just understand business. But with Spencer at the helm and his constant quest for something new, fresh and different, I guess they could risk again. What will be the end result, though?

the last thing they did was a 4.0 kinect sports game and i think before they made some crappy game

On a more serious note, they need to just start a new IP and stop creating Kinect games. No matter what they won't be able to meet the expectations of the old fans by attempting at old IPs.

I agree to a point. Gamers are so nostalgic with regards to change. But Banjo Kazooie was a fantastic platformer with great level design and progression. Nuts and Bolts actually controlled better though and had more gameplay ideas. Could have been more interesting in the platforming department but what the hey? Mario owns that genre hard anyway.

Yes. Because dumb gamers own them and told them to make kinect games. Yup.

In the 5th generation (N64) Rare was recognized for its gaming accomplishments. But after Kameo and Viva Pinata, Microsoft re-purposed them with the sole focus as the Kinect developers. And afterwards much of the talent within left and moved on to other studios, leaving Rare a mere shell of what it used to be.

But the legacy need not die. I would LOVE to see a new Perfect Dark game. Joanna Dark is an icon in her own right and the Perfect Dark games has a proud heritage for pioneering the FPS genre on console platforms.

And here's the thing; that series doesn't rely on Rare (even being its creators) to be ushered into the new generation. Microsoft owns the property and they can commission from any of a number of skilled FPS development teams out there to take the reigns of Joanna Dark. Just think of Nintendo reaching out to Retro Studios and allowing them to handle one of their prized series - Metroid. And what a highly successful and acclaimed new vision of Samus that resulted from this collaboration.

Microsoft can do the very same thing here, let another dev team revive Joanna. Be that a sequel or hell, why not a reboot? Like I said before, she's an icon and should not be allowed to slip into obscurity.

Well, MS had to find something for them to do, they did buy them. That Kinect garbage was the most commercially successful stuff Rare has done in over a decade. So yea, gamers are what killed Rare.

The new Killer Instinct isn't even made by Rare. It was developed by Double Heilix. Rare may have provided the raw assets (or perhaps some creative input into the character design), but it was DH who did the bulk of the work.

So yeah, Rare is just a peripheral department of MS (Kinect), not a game developer any more.

It's not companies that make games, it's people that work there. Half had left when MS bought them and nearly all have gone now. They've been making shit games since the GC. MS gave them a lot of opportunities during the Xbox and Xbox 360 gens. Of course they got relegated to Kinect games. How many times do you think MS is going to give them multi million pound budgets?

I'd like to see Rare have a comeback, why not, that would be awesome. But, do I think it'll actually happen? **** no. Rare was Bret Hart, and Microsoft was WCW, they had no idea what to do with Rare.

Playing it now I'm thinking it wouldn't have aged well but bringing the game-play & visuals up to standard and marketing the heck out of it, a new Conker would be a massive hit since I mean, it's a shooter that differs greatly from say Halo, PD & Gears but would bring that fan base along and be satisfying but that could just be me.

You should have played it if you had an N64. This was a 3D platformer and a TPS in one game.

Man I quit looking to Rare for possible hits a LONG time ago. It would be great if they bounce back with something awesome, but I'm certainly not expecting them to. They're pretty much just a name at this point.

I won't point fingers at who "killed" them, or anything like that, but the dream is over.

Rare killed themselves off as its been recently said MS gave them as much freedom as Nintendo ... What should MS do with Rare when all their games flopped other then kinect sports ... Pull a Sony move and keep franchises going like killzone ratchet & clank and whatever the dev name who made heavy rain and beyond two souls for no other reason then to gain a few fans of those games ... MS is a business and don't want games that sell poorly ... Now that Phil Spencer is hired MS will give him the power to green light projects again like they did with the previous people who ran xbox ... Rare will get a clean slate again and another chance to develop games ... I do believe a conker game is coming maybe not this E3 though but its coming ... There is no way a business company would run conker out for what ? to promote a free to play game ? doubt it ... His own game is coming ... and other games are coming from rare ... lets see if rare is any good still ...
