Poll What kind of gamer are you? (68 votes)

One who plays mostly for the gameplay, level design, and challenge 56%
One who plays mostly for the atmosphere, setting, and story 44%

I feel like there are two major camps for most players and I've decided to make a very bare bones poll to represent this.

If you HAD to absolutely choose between the two above sanctions, what would you pick? What aspects give you the most enjoyment out of a game? If you truly cannot decide, let's discuss.

I do enjoy a nice open world game that immerses me in a world I've always wanted to explore the way Red Dead and AC 4 have done. I've always wanted to experience the wild west and what it's like to be a pirate, but in the end I'm far more on the gameplay, level design, and challenge side of things. Give me a game with clever level design and a challenge that'll put hair on my chest and I'll be a happy camper.

I play mostly for the story. I consider videogames the newest delivery method for story telling. Word of mouth to novels to movies and television and finally games.

I also enjoy the social aspect of cooperative based games.

Where's the option for both? Also, wouldn't level design fit into atmosphere?

I can't choose between the two, both for me. I can play games like Jak II, DMC or other challengeing games but can also enjoy a game like Prince of Persia 08. I guess that is why FFXIII-3 is so far one of my favorite games in a while (or since TLOU) because it is a challenging RPG that has this incredible open-world where NPCs have lives and personalites and you feel like your presence has a substantial impact on the world. Best way to describe it is like a single-player MMORPG,...if that makes any sense.

I have no idea what kind of gamer I am based on the games I play:

Far Cry 3 - the post-campaign Reset Outpost mode, not the campaign itself

Flight Simulator X - custom missions with custom and real world weather

The Crysis games - all of em

ARMA 2 modern warfare sim

The Uncharted games - all of em

Sports games (PS3) - EA Sports FIFA and NFL/NCAA

The Mass Effect games - all of em

A host of strategy games dating back back from 1994 to current times

-----

No RPG games based on medieval times - no same old armor, shield, sword stuff. I like the time periods after aircraft was invented.

No WW2 or modern warfare FPS games - burned out

-I want people to really think and figure out which side they fall on or get some good discussion going. That's why I limited the options a great deal.

-I don't think level design fits into atmosphere. When I think of level design, I think of something that directly complements the gameplay. For example, the level design in a Zelda dungeon would be the puzzles and challenges offered and the atmosphere would be the overall theme of that dungeon. at least that's how I think of it.

That's a tough one. I'm love & enjoy all of the different aspects of game design. On one hand, I like to be immersed into the world, setting, and story. That's why I enjoy RPG's & Adventure games so much. On the other hand, I can still thoroughly enjoy a game like Smash bros, Super Mario world, etc; things that focus primarily on gameplay. Also, with new games like Rust/Dayz, etc. I do believe that "gameplay" is one of the most important factor within any game. It's honestly what differentiates it from just being a movie.

Thoughts?

Pretty limited options here, don't you think? :P

Where's the, "Plays games that are fun" option?

As an Apple fan you should be use to limited options. Oh god, that was good. C'mon people.

On topic - I like both. Why do I have to choose?

While both are extremely important, and no game is complete without both, I'd have to pick story/atmosphere.

As good as they are, I always have trouble getting into games like Mario, where there is little to no story; and a game with a bad or poorly told story is even worse.

On the other hand, I can typically look past some average gameplay (as long as it isn't broken) if the story or atmosphere is good enough.

I am a guy that loves technical prowess in games, like graphics, animations, set pieces, sound design. Gameplay and story go hand in hand.

Typically I actually find myself skipping the story elements altogether. For example, I don't really know what the story is for my favorite franchises. I try to follow it a little just so I know what to do, but if you question me about it afterwards, I could only give the barebones of what actually went on lol.

I enjoy both, depending on the game?

Why does it have to be one or the other?

I'll choose setting and story over "difficulty" (which is not always the same as complexity) any time. I'd rather spend 10 hours with a great set of characters and an engrossing story with little challenge than 10 hours trying to "make that f'ing jump" or "trying to kill that boss" in a game with no story.

I cant play a game that has shitty story - gameplay eventually gets repetitive so i need something to keep me going.

To answer definitively one way or the other is too polarizing. It just depends on the individual game.

I pick option 3. All of the above, and then some.

I think I am the only person in the history of gaming to never truly hate any game I have ever played. I have found enjoyment in the thousands of titles I have played in some way, shape, or form. Even utterly horrible gameplay is enough to make me laugh and wonder if it was somewhat intentional.

I'll mainly play a game for its gameplay and/or battle system. I also enjoy a plethora of side quests and excursions. I can get through a mediocre story and setting if the gameplay is killer.

This. I like almost everything as long as it isn't a milked title.

Both. I like all those things in my games. I also like easy games. If I die more than a couple times in a row, I get upset and stop playing the game. I don't have time to waste being stuck on a level for hours anymore. Today I was pwning MGS3D and I got to volgin. The terrible 3DS controls screwed me up and I failed. So I turned off the game and I'll beat him tomorrow. I can easily pwn him in the PS2/PS3 HD versions no problem, but they made minor changes to MGS3D so I have to re-learn how to kill him. It's really annoying.

Gameplay is important, but these days it tends to be a good story that really keeps me going when playing game.
