For me personally I would have to go with Power Stone and Power Stone 2, it's such a good and obscure game formula but executed in a way that makes it something special and unique in its own right. Every match has something much different to offer and the constant power struggle over collecting the three stones to get your major damage rendering special attacks plus monitoring your health brings a level of suspense not found in many other fighting games.

Coincidentally this game has a lot in common with Super Smash Bros and they both released within a month of each other. If you've never tried it and have access to a Dreamcast I would suggest tracking it down, it's a great single player game and fathoms better as a party game.

If there is one franchise I would love to see ressurrected it would without a doubt be this.

I gotta Power Stone as well. I love that game is what made the Dreamcast awesome back then and I enjoy using WangTang which he was a cool fighter and has that Goku/Super Saiyan vibe going for back then DBZ was a thing. It's sad to see Capcom toss this series to the pits of death franchise. Capcom could've just make a new Power Stone and not SFV, everyone will welcome back Power Stone with open arms.

Street fighter, Super Smash Bros, and Mortal Kombat are my 3 favorite fighting games and also Killer Instinct.

Karate Champ.

Boom!

I have spent more money in that arcade game to buy a few Xbox Ones.

Unconventional? You mean something other than a 2D tournament fighting game, a 3D tournament fighter or a melee fighter? I got nothing.

Power Stone is fun , but i don't think i have a favorite brawl game.

Maybe the Def Jam games , but i don't know if they count.

Or Twisted Metal , that's as unconventional as it can get for a fighting game , because you fight with cars , but again , does it count?

I think Def Jam counts, it was a great game also, very underrated. Power Stone series was great fun also.

I total forgot about the Def Jam games, those were a lot of fun and I would definitely say they were unconventional.

Power Stone 2

The 4 player multi-player mode is so fun and addictive.

Also, the Anime is pretty good as well. It's on Youtube if you want to give it a shot.

I'm not a huge anime guy, however I think I am going to buy these simply for collection purposes.

I like Power Stone 1 & 2 a lot, but the Virtual On games are probably my favorite. You can't go wrong with either series though.

@nyadc: I buy lots of games for Vita, it really comes down to how interested I am in playing any one of them and their lengths. I really bought it for multiplayer with the woman on her Vita, and I've been out of country.

Power Stone is good but Virtual On is better. That game is classic and could really be enveloped further. Love those old flat shaded visuals.

If Smash Bros doesn't count then Final Fantasy Dissidia is pretty neat. It doesn't hold up well under a magnifying glass but w.e, it's a guilty pleasure of mine.

Yeah, Virtual On was a sick series. Played it a handful of times at the arcade. It's a shame Sega doesn't do anything with it.

It's more like they don't want to bring it overseas. The 4th one came out exclusively for the 360 in Japan, but it's at least region free. What really annoyed me is that when SEGA was releasing Model 2 games on XBLA a couple of years ago, they kept the first game, Operation Moongate, as a Japanese only release. Why? I don't know. Oratorio Tangrem was put on XBLA, so why not release the original game too?

Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring (PS1)

Power Stone 2 (Dreamcast)

Also people mentioning games like Rival Schools and Tobal, I don't think those are considered unconventional. Although I remember Tobal 2 had an amazing dungeon mode mini game that was basically like a whole other game that's what you're talking about.

Why doesn't Dissidia hold up? It's an excellent fighting game with great mechanics.

The closest thing to Powerstone I've played is One Piece: Grand Battle on the GameCube (WARNING: Grating 4Kids censorship and voices ahead):

Loading Video...

I personally had fun with it, especially playing it with my sis when we would do Zolo/Zoro vs Sanji.

There was also Super DBZ on PS2 and that's pretty fun (and come to think of it, DBZ fighters grew unconventional after the original Budokai Trilogy, which was as conventional as the series was ever going to get):

Although of course, my favorite non-traditional fighter is Smash Bros. Brawl.
