Poll What is Sony's best series? (73 votes)

Gran Turismo 14%
Uncharted 25%
God of War 22%
inFamous 4%
Killzone 0%
Ratchet and Clank 11%
Jak and Daxter 5%
Sly Cooper 1%
LittleBigPlanet 1%
Resistance 1%
WipEout 4%
Syphon Filter 1%
Other (Please Specify) 10%

Over the last 20 years, Sony has managed to build a pretty respectable catalog of some damn good franchises on the PlayStation. Sony covers a whole range of gaming styles, and chances are, no matter what kind of games you like, Sony probably has you covered.

But which of their numerous franchises do you think is the absolute best? And why?

As for me, I had to think about it, but in the end, I had to go with:

That's right, God of War. I did have to think about this one a bit, since Uncharted had Uncharted 2, but to counter that, God of War has had some of my favorite games of all time- the original God of War game, which I felt was a complete revelation, God of War II, which might be the best game Sony has ever made, Chains of Olympus, which was a staggering achievement on handhelds; while I was disappointed with the series as it moved into the PS3 era (God of War III was slow, boring, and underwhelming, even if it was in the end a well made game, Ghost of Sparta was the first game in the series I could not bring myself to finish, and Ascension was just a disaster on all fronts), God of War still remains my favorite Sony franchise, and still the one I can conceivably get most excited about.

I can't wait to see what Santa Monica does with it on PS4.

Ratchet and Clank, probably, despite their shitty spin-offs.

Going with Gran Turismo. They've never had a consistently great series, but GT was tops for a while.

I was going to say Gran Turismo but it seems like you only see Polyphony put a game out once every 6 years so I went with Uncharted. But what the hell do I know.

God of War was steller, so was Resistance 2, overall I'd say God of War. I hope they don't reboot the f*cking series

God of War. For it's time, the series was the defining IP for the PS2. It's never been a high skill based H&S like Ninja Gaiden or DMC, but has an "action adventure" game, GOW delivered on awesome spectale.

In fact, it did set piece design before Uncharted 2. Now, the new GOW will have to do something different and evolve the mechanics, ALOT, but if i take GOW 1, 2 and 3, i find it the Playstation's best exclusive series.

God of war by far, but sadly there hasn't been a really good one in 5 years. ascension was alright. I'm excited for a god of war 4 on PS4 though.

I'd say it's between inFAMOUS and Ratchet & Clank for me. Those series are gameplay focused and a heck of a lot of fun. There's something addictive about powering myself up as good then evil in the inFAMOUS games as well as leveling up all those crazy weapons in R&C.

In terms of the God of War discussion here, I really enjoyed the first game. It was a lot of fun and had a different flavor to it than a lot of games of its time. However, I felt like the franchise stagnated as soon as the second game released. The combat was largely unchanged and the enemy design was almost copy and pasted. I felt the same way for the 3rd installment as well.

The thing that irks me the most about the franchise is its formula. It heavily deters replay. There is no option to revisit chapters and there is no point system to encourage besting yourself. It's just a bare bones start to finish story mode. It just feels like God of War should have evolved somewhat in that regard especially in an Hack n Slash ecosystem that has these replay options as a standard.

Twisted Metal.

Ape Escape, Singstar, Champions of Norrath, Legend of Legaia, Wild Arms, Warhawk/Starhawk, Hot Shots Golf, SOCOM, Team ICOs series, PaRappa the Rapper, or Twisted Metal....with some love for Sly Cooper, Ratchet, God of War, and Jak (those four are in the poll).

Not really. One way or the other you can argue for three great entries, of which one is truly excellent.

God of War 1 was fresh back then, but is a bit of a tough sit nowadays

God of War 2 is fucking great

God of War Chains of Olympus is a PSP tech demo

God of War 3 is only half good. The first half.

God of War Ghost of Sparta is pretty solid (better than 3)

God of War Ascension is the definition of meh.

That's exactly what Sony is all about, owning IPs, much like Nintendo and previously Sega. That's one thing these Japanese companies have in common.

Sony made a colossal effort owning IPs ever since they got burned in the 1990s with the whole Universal IP debacle. Sony learned after that. I guess you weren't paying much attention to the IP discussions all these years?

It's Sony's desire to own IPs which lead to Insomniac making a game with EA and then for Xbone (M$ are less interested in owning IPs). Insomniac want to own IPs and they own FUSE and Sunset. What Insomniac do with those IPs in the future are anyone's guess. Insomniac are still working with Sony for the next Ratchet PS4 game due later this year for instance (Ratchet is a Sony IP).

Going to go with the God of war series. Not a single one that wasn't impressive at it's time that I've played anyway. Missed the last one and never played the psp versions but they all got good reviews. Uncharted would be in a close second. Though I'm sick of both and want fresh IP's with great stories like The last of Us.

That's my whole point.

After their first machine the 1994 released PS1, Sony was fine with awkward publishing rights. However, Sony pursued owning IPs after having some strange publishing arrangements with other companies in that era and getting burned. Late PS1 onward, they went after owning and creating their own IPs which we saw in the PS2, PS3, and now PS4 era.

So, to answer your original question, Sony owns the IPs of the games in the OP, every single one, and even more than that like Twisted Metal, Starhawk, Warhawk, Champions of Norrath, Singstar, Hot Shots Golf, Legend of Dragoon, The Last of Us, Puppeteer, Tearaway, etc.

What some people don't understand as well is that most of these games are made by Sony Studios. To answer your other question, Battle Arena was a Takara IP but Destruction Derby was a Sony IP. For whatever reason in that PS1 era, Sony was willing to see their IPs across other platforms back then as they were new to gaming but no longer (the IP sharing wasn't reciprocal for one thing).

There's so many dead Sony franchises that I think they should bring back or reboot... Syphon Filter, Midevil, etc... but Uncharted has quickly become my favorite franchise no matter how much I love God of War.

@SolidTy:

Ah, I did not know all of that.

So are teams such as Naughty Dog built up by Sony, or does Sony seek out talented groups and more or less buy them out? Because if it is the former that would make Sony quite the force and it would be silly for people to disrespect such a gaming company.

I don't know the answer, but are you sure about that? It seems silly for any developer to tie themselves to one console when they can make more money on 3 releases of the same product, in addition to the dlc that goes along with it.

Jak and Daxter or Twisted Metal. God of War might be third. Uncharted 1 exists, so it gets knocked out of the top 5 because holy shit that game is terrible.

In all honesty, most of their first-party stuff isn't that impressive.

If I had to break it down by era:

PS1 - Wipeout or Jumping Flash!

PS2 - Gran Turismo

PS3 - Uncharted

Overall - Gran Turismo, since it's the only one that lasted across all three eras.

A combination of both. Sony has studios they built up like Sony Santa Monica Studios, Team ICO, and Polyphony which were responsible for games like God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, and Gran Turismo.

Sony has purchased studios that are now part of Sony completely like Naughty Dog, Media Molecule, and Sucker Punch who make games like Infamous, Sly Cooper, Jak, LittleBigPlanet, Tearway, Uncharted, and The Last of Us. All of these are Sony studios but some were built up by Sony and others are bought out completely.

There are more internal Sony studios, but these are just some examples of studios along with their output.

Of course, Sony will sign up and work with outside companies but the deal is the 2nd party will work on a game that will become a future Sony IP. Examples of these kinds of games include Lair, Heavenly Sword, Demon's Souls, Frequency, LBP3, Amplitude, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance, God of War Ghost of Sparda PSP & Chains of Olympus PSP, Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls, Playstation Allstars, Daxter, the Order 1886, etc.

Either way, the games are funded and owned by Sony (Sony IPs) who bring a lot of games to the market for gamers. I didn't mention digital games they create or fund like resogun, fat princess, pain, etc.
