N64 is one of the greatest consoles of all time, and i love the Ps1 just as much, but the N64 had something really important that most other consoles at the time never fully took advantage of. And that's 4 player multiplayer. Goldeneye, Super Smash Brothers, Mario Kart 64, Turok 2, Mario Party, Starfox 64, Army Men, Diddy Kong Racing, Perfect Dark along with some of the best single player games of all time, Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, Banjo & Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Majoras Mask, Turok, Conquers Bad Fur Day, Pokemon Snap, DK64, Kirby 64, Mystical Nina Starring Goemon, 1080, Pilot Wings 64, and even Body Harvest (paved the way for GTA3 later on.) So amazing platformers + 4 player + best adventure games, + amazing first person shooters Even obsure platformers like Glover, Gex 64, Earthworm Jim 3D and Chameleon Twist were fun. Just too much hate, especially for a console that has Wave Race. :)1995rox
Hmmm...that's funny, because I had an N64 and I think it is far FAR from the best console. In fact, I would argue it is Nintendo's worst console. Personally, Goldeneye was good, but not legendary as people make it out to be. Much like Halo and FF7 it was the right game at the right time, and because of that people confuse it for the best game of ALL time. I personally didn't like the vast majority of those games you listed, the controller was very poorly conceived, the carts were expensive and to this day I swear that, except for maybe 2 or 3 games, the graphicsfor PS1 were better.
the nintendo 64 is the best system of its gen i dont care about sonys 10 yr fluke , /flukes,
based on brand lol ,
its about time they took a back seat , all sony does is force new formats unto us like there no tomorow
the n64 was ok in its time, but of all consoles that matter, it has definitely aged the worst. there's no doubt that it had some incredible games, but that list isnt very long.
yes there was starcraft 64, it sucked, there was no reason to like it when the pc version still stands as one of the all time greats
Perfect Dark is one of the auto wins. Another one for me would probably be Goldeneye and Ocarina of Time. But back on topic, the N64 is my number one favorite console of all time. I certainly don't hate it.Perfect Dark on the list is an automatic win. Yeah, I loved the N64 a lot as well and still play N64 games.

Actually I see a lot of love for the N64. I have one and I still use it. A great console that has far too expensive games, and not enough of them. But Paper Mario, SM64, OoT, it's a great list.
Yes it definitely was the first and last console to do 4 player multiplayer right, but in the end it doesn't matter because playing together with a friend on the same system is pretty much obsolete now. Javy03
this is a tragic thing to hear. im so sick on online only multiplayer. games with local multiplayer get so much time in my xbox when friends come over its insane. i refused to buy l4d on the basis that it has no 4-player splitscreen (well and the fact that it sucked)
It's my favorite console of all time. Titles like Goldeneye, OoT, MM, SSB, Banjo, Perfect Dark, Lylat Wars, SM64, MK64 ++.. ah, the memories!
.... yea, I know right, we should still be on catridhes or pointless mini discs :roll:the nintendo 64 is the best system of its gen i dont care about sonys 10 yr fluke , /flukes,

The day that gamers sacrificed cartridges to save a little money and to watch cheesy CGI moviesis the day we lost our integrity.

I agree to an extent. I would love more local multiplayer as well for when friends come over and to play and with my girl but on the same note games like fighters allow me to expand my competition from more then my few friends thanks to online. I am also not a kid anymore and people coming over is more rare then me having the place to myself with my girl so online gets used alot more then local.[QUOTE="Birdy09"][QUOTE="mariokart64fan"]

No, we lost our integrity when using cheat codes was the norm because many NES, Genesis and SNES games didnt have infinity continues so losing in a game a certain amount of times meant starting over from scratch. I realize why games were harder when I was kid now, because I only had ONE shot at finishing it. I am a fan of CGI movies/cinemas and getting a theatrical experience while playing. It makes me care about the characters and story alot more. I can't imagine what the rate of unfinished NES, Genesis and SNES games were, but I am sure it's much bigger then it is now.I'll never love the N64 more than the PS1, since it lacks RPGs, but I will ALWAYS love the Banjo-Kazooie series. It beats just about every platformer ever made on a PlayStation console imo. Seems like Platformers on PlayStation consoles try too hard to be "cool" (I'm referring to Jak, Ratchet, etc.).
N64 is hands down my favourite console of all time. It holds many of my fondest memories of gaming. To me it will never be beaten.

So you're the type who skips the cut scenes, ignores the characters and just run 'n guns the whole game? If you're not paying attention to the story you're missing out on half the experience. Games today are meant to be immersive, challenging and entertaining. The immersion comes with the story, with the belief that you are the character on screen and you actually care about what is happening to he/she/it. If you don't care, then you instantly lose a huge part of the game.N64 is one of the greatest consoles of all time, and i love the Ps1 just as much, but the N64 had something really important that most other consoles at the time never fully took advantage of. N64 taught Nintendo a lesson. Gamecube confirmed it. That you need third party support to have a hugely successful console. Also it determined the end of cartridges. Nintendo made alot of money off of those cartridges during the nes and SNES days. So they were reluctant to give up those profits and rights. Sadly Wii has allowed anyone to make any game on it's regardless of quality. Let's bring back the old NINTENDO SEAL OF QUALITY.
The N64 is the byproduct of Nintendo betraying their partners and pulling out of previous agreements for no reason other than pure elistism. Nintendo made a deal behind Sony's back while pretending they were still working together, Sony invested a lot of money helping nintendo as they did with previous consoles. Nintendo did something very taboo in japan, betray another japanese business with a western business. Phillips, thus the snes CD project was dropped, and they made the N64. Sony, shocked at this out of no where betrayal continued on with the project on their own...the Playstation was born. Nintendo's japanese third party developers were disgusted with nintendo, and therefor developed for the Playstation exclusively.
NIntendo lost a lot of their friends in Japan...Capcom, Namco, Square, Enix...ect This is why the N64 was comprised mostly of Nintendo developed games, and USA/UK games. They failed to get them back even with the GameCube, which hurt them bad. Even with the Wii they are still suffering from strong japanese third party support. This is the reason i dislike the N64, rather Nintendo. I still have my n64, but I played it knowing why its what it is. I had much more enjoyment out of the more mature and varied PS1 titles, especially as an RPG fan. Furthermore, the PS3 was somewhat sabotaged by Ken.
This is why the PS3 was so expensive and off to a bad start. It relates directly to the story i told above. Why? When Sony's new CEO was revealed to be a man from the UK, a westerner, Ken became very uncooperative. He hated the fact that a westerner was in charge of the japanese company. Before he was fired, he left the project in shambles. The PS3, which could have destroyed the competition was really put back by these events, and Sony is trying to fix what was done, which is what you are seeing now still.
its been 2 gens. True N64=my favorite system of all time. But this is system wars, not legacy boards.
But you still do see the ocasional N64 vs. PS1, and Xbox GFx vs. Gamecube GFX.
The developers weren't "disgusted" at anything, cd's held a lot more stuff than cartridges, that's why there were more third party games on the ps1.

Nice story N64 was one of my favourite consoles, some of the best games of all time. Shame the GC was so bad in comparison :(In reality, it was all Sony's own fault because they made the contract that Nintendo signed and later broke. The contract said that all the money "Nintendo Playstation" games made would go to Sony. Nintendo did not like this and broke the contract. Nintendo should have read it in the first place, since they didn't know about it until 5 years after they signed it, but it was Sony's own doing that led to the broken partnership. The Japanese developers weren't disgusted by Nintendo actually, they really didn't seem to care that much. They still made SNES games thru the whole generation. They were going to make games for N64 too, until Sony's smart strategy persuaded them to move to the cheaper CD medium. The N64 is the byproduct of Nintendo betraying their partners and pulling out of previous agreements for no reason other than pure elistism. Where are you getting your information? I think you are just assuming. Why then did some western developers (third party) go with nintendo instead of the Playstation? If CD's were the only reason, Nintendo would have absolutely no third party titles. Why then does the PS3, which has the largest and least pirated medium not get all those third party developers? There is a lot more that you are neglecting. Namco especially dropped all ties with nintendo after the betrayal. It is well documented, the japanese reaction to Nintendo's actions. In fact, the N64 was not all that popular in Japan, nintendo had to target the non japanese audiences. Squaresoft is the only company to say they like the CD size over nintendo's carteriges. Nintendo's Yamauchi, who was the cause of all the digust at Nintendo, later had to step down, which is why you see the Wii, with a new man at the helm, use a different business strategy. The story above is directly from news souces in Japan, which was all over the place during that time. I was playing the NES when it first game out and remember specifically all the problems caused when nintendo did that move.
