Amazon has struck a deal with Crystal Dynamics to continue ruining Tomb Raider.

Earlier this year, it was announced that the next game in the Tomb Raider series was in development.

While details about this upcoming release are still thin on the ground, with even its name still remaining a mystery, today Amazon Games announced it will be working alongside developer Crystal Dynamics on the project.

Amazon will provide its "full support" to the team at Crystal Dynamics to bring this next Tomb Raider game to life, the company said today. On the game's release, Amazon Games will also act as its publisher.

In a joint press release, the two companies said Lara's next outing will be a "single-player, narrative-driven adventure" - a first for Amazon Games.

As with previous Tomb Raider games, this release will have "mind-bending puzzles to solve", with the promise of a "wide variety of enemies to face and overcome".

The game itself is still in the very early stages of development, but Amazon and Crystal claim it will become the "the biggest, most expansive Tomb Raider game to date".

Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics did not share any more specifics about the game itself, but assure us that more details will be announced "at a later date".

As part of this announcement, Crystal Dynamics head Scot Amos addressed the studio's recent acquisition by Embracer, stating this collaboration has allowed the team to "redefine what a publishing relationship is for Tomb Raider".

"Transformative is what we're looking for, and with Amazon Games, we found a team that shares our creative vision, ambitions, and values for a Lara Croft universe across the spectrum of possibilities," Amos said today.

Back in April, it was announced that the next installment in the Tomb Raider series will be made in Unreal Engine 5.

Since then, Days Gone director Jeff Ross has joined the studio, although it has not been confirmed he is working specifically on that game.

In addition to Ross, former Call of Duty developer Belinda Garcia has confirmed she is working on "the future of Tomb Raider" as a narrative designer.

Meanwhile, the Tomb Raider film franchise has taken a bit of a stumble. Following its buyout by Amazon, MGM has lost the rights to make Tomb Raider movies.

This has resulted in a bidding war for the rights, with former Lara Croft actress Alicia Vikander no longer attached to the project.

original TR games were far inferior to Mafia and Max payne and they both made it feel like generations behind.

They were lower budget downloadable stuff, so they were like, more interested in being a game.

Still, aside from those Lara Croft games, even before reboot of a reboot, never really like any of Crystal Dynamics entries since Legend. Stripped away what made Core Design games appealing.

look at how max payne play then look at how TR play lol. terrible controls and camera vs near perfect control and shooting that still age well.

I very much enjoyed the reboot trilogy so am looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.

I enjoyed the last one, in the hardest difficulty exploration and puzzles are nice. They should just get rid of the Rambo shit.

Well that's...concerning....about the Amazon deal. What's the catch? Streaming only through some AWS thingy using the corpse of Stadia? ....god i hope not.

The last 3 games were solid though. The tombs were good when they did them and they certainly give their host systems a good workout. Hopefully Crystal Dynamics have the resources to push the state of the art. I remember Rise of the Tomb Raider being my "oh...this is what these new machines can do" moment (even though there was a 360 version, which is an impressive feat in its own right). I was walking along and all of a sudden the detail on a stature really struck me. The lighting and texture work and model just looked like a step up from anything i can recall from PS3/360 games.

But a bit less story, a bit less combat (unless they have a great new idea involving dual pistols and it not being a cover shooter) and a bit more tomb raiding would be great.

Well, I guess the budget will still be big then. Kinda figured they would have to scale things back a bit when Embracer bought them, which might have ended up being a good thing the way AAA is these days.

Amazon's track record for game development is not great. They make either mediocre games, or unpopular games.

Also, Amazon's big money makers are their online/storage services, and their warehousing services. Expect this game come with a lot of bullshit extras like online-only, streaming, etc.

With that said, I enjoyed the franchise reboot and hope they keep going with that stuff. Good level design, character development, and combat.

I only played the first game in the reboot trilogy. Thought it was alright - didn't feel like giving the sequels a go. It's interesting to see how Amazon backing a new entry will affect the end product.

Shadow's side content was enjoyable imo. Shame you had to suffer through the campaign to get to it.

Something like Anniversary would be my choice if i could pick the direction to take the series... but this likey won't go that route.

I hope this is the sequel we finally find out that Lara is transgender. This would add more character and depth to the actual Lara's character, and i believe that's a good thing. Exciting days are coming, and my body is ready🤗

Honestly, I'd be perfectly okay with them going back to the old school TR. Just keep making TR 1-2-3-4 and I'm straight. Even Anniversary, Legend, and Underworld were cool. Keep making those, please. Never going to happen, but damn it'd be nice.

The new logo. That Amazon curvy schlong is killing me, but I'm optimistic, nonetheless.

Curious how Amazon plans to distribute the game. Or what they even think they'll accomplish with it. More Amazon Prime subscriptions? Will they release it on multiple platforms and make money as the publisher?

They've released to multiple systems before (though few games) but i'd guess this would be a full new-gen release.

The last Tomb Raider game bored the hell out of me so I hope they end up better that that.

Lame. Would've been cool if Tomb Raider... was cool. But most people need help with their games nowadays. We simply can't figure out stuff on our own anymore, and need games to show us or just flat out do things for us. Pretty much confirmed to be one of those lame ass hollywood movie games.
