Here is my top 5.

5. Master Chief

Really, what is special about this character? Nothing. Basically a generic space marine that got popular because the series got huge. You don't see his face and he is nearly a silent protagonist, so he has no personality. He just became an icon because the series he was in became a mjor multi million selling hit.

4. Kratos

Lowest common denominator. This character is the embodiment of everything wrong with video games...dumb sensless violence. Who cares about his somewhat "tragic" backstory, he is there just to kill everyone in his path, as violently as possible. And the stories in the God of War games are far from great, all style and very little substance. This character is what a teenager finds awesome and smart people find mindless.

3. Cloud Strife

Mediocrity put up on a high pilliar all because the game he was in was a huge breakthrough. Most of the cast of FFVII could be on this list, but since Cloud is the icon, he is on the list. There is really nothing special about him. Is he truly a better protagonist than a knight who seeks redemption for his actions, or am abusedmixed species girl who tries to find out what it means to be human, or a fallen young female general looking for hope, or that caring, happy go lucky thief with a tail? Nope. He is not a bad character, he is just average by comparison, with his only special traits being that he was in the game that got big and that he has a sword a size of a car trunkthat looked cool then but ridiculous now.

2. Gordon Freeman

I love Half Life and HL2, but c'mon people, Gordon Freeman is not a great character. He has no personality and no depth and considering he is a scientist, very rare protagonists in games, a huge oppurtunity was blown to make him more than an icon, but an actually character. Jack from Bioshock has more personality than Freeman does. He is also by far, not the greatest video game character ever. Not even close. For him to win the Gamespot contest was simply ludicrious. Main reason why he i son the list. Now, Alyx Vance...we have a great character there....

1. Sephiroth

The most overrated villain ever. The only thing that he really has is that he is a great foil to Cloud (and he is kind of menancing)...thats it. He lacks a motive, a huge plot hole in FFVII. Why does he want to become a god and devestate the world? Nope, all we get is fan speculation. People think he is the most evil villain ever, especially for killing Aeris....WRONG..there are far more saidstic and sinister villains in gaming, including that sociopath in the previous installment. Then there is people who think he is the ultimate tragic villain...nope, there are a bunch of better tragic antagonists. I can a name 20 video game villains better than Sephiroth. He is not the best video game villian ever,or the best Final Fantasy villain ever, and he is not even the best villain in FFVII.
Its Professor Hojo
Niko Bellic, he is awful, the entire time i wanted to kill him. I kept speeding to make him go out the windshield. I agree with Masterchief and Gordon freeman, those are not even characters, they hardly have an opinion or show their faces.

Kratos by far. He's a whining, screaming crybaby that throws bloody tantrums when he doesn't get his way. He appeals to every red-blooded, testosterone-pumped 13-year-old, and also David Jaffe, who has that mindset.

Aw be nice :P Sometimes it's fun to have a raging madman as your character. Not everyone can be the strong silent hero out to save the world!

TC, I can argue with you on 3 2 and 1, but I wont.

My top 5 overrated video game characters:

5. All the final fantasy characters past the first game

4. Nintendo's characters (Even though I love them)

3. All the sonic characters aside from Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Robotnik, and Metal Sonic.

2. Kratos

1. Master Chief

The Chief is actually in the Navy. And the Chief only speaks when he has something to say, he is highly disciplined.

Gordon Freeman isn't supposed to have a personality, he's supposed to be the avatar for the player. Master Chief, I would agree with. Kratos, badass but can be extremely shallow. That said, I'll throw in another name. Marcus Fenix of Gears of War and Morrigan of Dragon Age Origins.

That changed in God of War III, with his relationship with Pandora.
Just think of it like this: Why were all the Gods crazy in the series? Because Kratos opened Pandora's Box and released fear, regret, disdain, loathing, anger, hatred and hope onto the world. Just think of it as Kratos absorbed not only hope, but hatred as well. And frankly, wouldn't you be pissed off if you were constantly being stabbed in the back, betrayed, lied to as much as Kratos? All of his actions are brought upon by something.
Not that I disagree with Gordon being a bit overpraised as a character(he's not a character to be quite honest) I had to disagree with the whole missed opportunity thing. Half Life and Half Life 2 wouldn't be the same if Gordon actually talked, gave his opinon on the situation or was fleshed out and running his mouth. The fact that he doesn't talk, and you play through his eyes is sort of the whole point of how Half Life 1 and 2 play out from start to finish. I'd rather have the brick Gordon Freeman than an actual character when it comes to Half Life. Again that does not mean I think he is a great character On the contrary I don't think he is a character. I think he serves a different purpose.

Killing his family? yep that was all his doing

The whole thing with Zeus? he was told on multiple occaisons to stop acting like a prick(because that's what he was being) and instead of listening he kept doing what he damn well pleased. He was rightfully backstabbed, and then went on a giant killing spree as if he did nothing wrong. God of War 3 didn't change that. Pandora was such a horrid plot device. His sudden willingness to save her felt so contrived.

I've always thought that the only reason why Gordon Freeman is seen as such a memorable character is because of his supporting cast. People like Alex and Dr. Kliener and Barney make him so great because they are such amazing supporting characters. Filling in all the gaps and paying the muted Freeman all the attention a super killer from MIT deserves. :P

He was a born killer, and he excelled at his profession. But he was betrayed by the Gods multiple times, the main being when Athena lied to him about making his dreams go away. Then again when Zues took his title of God of War and his status as a God away from him and tried to kill him.

Gordon Freeman: After winning the Gamespot user award for the best video game character ever... I have to ask, why? No seriously, I don't get it. You never even SEE the character, he has nothing to say for himself and nothing about the character has any impact on the game at all. What characteristics does he have? Oh that's right... NONE. He's a blank canvas of a character, and I think people must've just been either high, stupid or trolling when they voted him as the best character. I can see the TC's arguments for characters like Kratos and Sephiroth, but they're at least slightly interesting.

Wow seriesly dude, I can understand the hate but being this "mega badass" is what makes a "God of War". What exactly are you expecting from a "God of War"?? Nice and cuddly? (ie: )

The title of the game is basically what he is.

No what I'm saying is that "he's suppose to be a badass" but on the contrary he's more or less a whiney little b-word. He can show more substance than being a rage filled killing machine.

Dreams that he more than goes out of his way to show he's not worthy of any sympothy. In the first game he's still the bloodlust heavy savage that got him into that mess in the first place. Sure he's doing the whole "what have I become routine" and then following it up with killing everything in his path. Again Athena may have lied, but he got himself into that situation in the first place

This case again HE WAS TOLD NOT TO screw around like he was. He was rightfully punished and then went on some rampage like he did nothing wrong. In any other context Kratos would serve as a villian long before a protagonist or even an anti hero. Outside of moment in the God of War trilogy
the whole washing away of his sins, and then giving hope to the world that he flat out destroyed
The God of War plot has done enough to give you no real reason to have any sympothy for the brute that he is. He's a character devoid of any actual substance or redeeming qualities, and it's one directly connected to how bad the plot is.

Wow seriesly dude, I can understand the hate but being this "mega badass" is what makes a "God of War". What exactly are you expecting from a "God of War"?? Nice and cuddly? (ie: )

The title of the game is basically what he is.

you just have to bring up that gif did you? its bringing back haunted memories from the E3 chatroom
He was betrayed/backstabbed for something of his own doing :|

Killing his family? yep that was all his doing

The whole thing with Zeus? he was told on multiple occaisons to stop acting like a prick(because that's what he was being) and instead of listening he kept doing what he damn well pleased. He was rightfully backstabbed, and then went on a giant killing spree as if he did nothing wrong. God of War 3 didn't change that. Pandora was such a horrid plot device. His sudden willingness to save her felt so contrived.

ACtually zeus was planing to kill him way before he was screwing around since he was infected by the box and was fearing kratos would try to kill him one day. All the gods were infected according to GOW3. All they wanted to do was control the world adn with them infected wouldint have helped. Iv read many tales of the these gods and one word sums them up pretty nicely JERKS. Im not saying hes the best character ether. He rather simple.

Well, they're all overrated. Almost all characters in games can either only have a restricted palette of emotions, are stereotypical or/and don't even say anything at all.

Which is actually pretty sad for a multi-billion industry. Borderline pathetic actually.

EDIT: Grammar.

He lacks a motive, a huge plot hole in FFVII. Why does he want to become a god and devestate the world?

Oh, the irony.

Now, Alyx Vance...we have a great character there....texasgoldrush

Then again, he's not supposed to be a great character in his own right, you always see the games from first person and he never talks because you are supposed to be him, it's a way to make you feel more like you're in the game instead of watching a game from the outside.

Gordan Freeman, easily. He doesn't talk, he has no personality. He serves his purpose, sure, but that doesn't make him a good character.
