Also, read some actual legit spoilers (mostly about gameplay rather than story stuff). Sounds fun and proper open-world type of stuff (which I applaud), but from description alone it does feel like there's a hyperbole effect going around. That said, the thing with gameplay is that one does need to try it out to properly rate that ever illusive thing that is the "fun factor". Features that on their own sound boring could end up making a fun experience when put together with other stuff. Also it could have just been the writer and his/her lack of description skills making things sound boring.
Yeah, I can make any game sound unfun by writing a description.
The Last of Us: you make your way through a post apocalyptic world infested with zombie like creatures and hostile humans, via a series of linear levels. Levels do offer alternating (linear) paths, and combat encounters can be approached via shooting, stealth, or melee. Sometimes there are puzzles that require you to work with an NPC character accompanying you.
See? It sounds drab, boring, and less than the sum of its parts. Reading gameplay spoilers does nothing but spoil the surprise from how the game actually implements its mechanics. No matter what you do though, a written description of mechanics will always sound boring- the thing with video games is that they are an interactive medium, and unless you get to experience said mechanics by interacting with them, you can't say whether they are good or not.
This is all without me knowing what it is you read, naturally. But whatever it was, you reading is not the same as you playing. People who have played the game are the only ones in any position to actually pass judgement on whether or not the game comes together mechanically.
