Never again will there be a game that is just as much pure videogaming perfection as Super Metroid is. A game that held up as well twenty years later as Super Metroid does.

This is Nintendo at its peak- its pinnacle, showcasing what it does best: pure game design. Incredible graphics, amazing storytelling, and arguably the greatest atmosphere and music of all time only add to the amazingness of the game design.

You know, if you haven't already played this game, go buy it on the Virtual Console and play it. See what alll the hype is about. I guarantee you, it's worth it.

If you have? Then play it again. Super Metroid deserves some celebration on its twentieth birthday.

I was going to come and drop a "Uncharted 2 isn't that old" comment but then I saw which game you are talking about...and I just can't do it. Super Metroid was SO good. I remember being like 2 years old and crying because I couldn't beat frickin' Crocomire. Still hate that thing lol. #NostalgiaGasm

Definitely one of the best games of all time. Never played it when younger, only on Wii VC. Good god what a game.

Think SNES was the best "Big Three" set: Super Mario World (and 2 and Allstars), Super Metroid, and The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past. Tough to beat that! (Though the Wii's Mario Galaxy 1 + 2, Prime Trilogy, and two Zelda's come close. Let down by weaker Zeldas and Other M :P)

I think, regardless of where our modern allegiances lie and what our modern gaming tastes are, we can all on this board agree on one thing: Super Metroid was fucking amazing.

Super Metroid is not even my favorite Metroid game, so no and lol @ G.O.A.T. It is one of my favorite snes games, however, and it's still fun to play every once in a while.

Personally, I think the game has aged badly. But then again, I was not a kid when the game came out, and I never actually hold games up on a pedestal in my head because I know I will most likely play a better game later on. So i don't let games make me go "OH MY GOD THIS IS OH MY GOD"

A lot of people who love the game did not play Super Metroid when it first came out, and only got around to it much later.

Including me, I played it after Prime revived the series. Many on this board played it as recently as 2010 and still love it.

Strong game design is independent of nostalgia.

Yeah Super Metroid is qutie amazing. I played it only a few years ago and it was awesome. Truly one of Nintendo's masterpieces. It speaks to the quality and agelessness of it that when I played it about four years ago it didn't feel old fashioned whatsoever. Well, maybe it felt old fashioned in that it wasn't holding my hand the entire time.

But I have to say that the storyline, atmosphere, audio, design, etc. was superior in Majora's Mask. They kind of did what they did with Super and made it incredibly mysterious, but it was even better than in Super. Here's hoping for a 3DS remake.

But you grew up with Nintendo and most likely grew up with the SNES, as also probably being one of your favorite consoles. Both of which whether you separate that or not only seem to cause people to thing SM is that good without growing up with it.

Even on Metroid discussions on random boards of different subjects over the last decade and a half, it's all literally been the same 3 reasons why people think SM good after it came out or while it was new.

Now I won't say all because I don't have numbers, but there's heavy evidence. Also Metroid Prime could not really have revived the series, it rebooted it if you could call it anything. Revive is something Spyro or COD would need.

I know that it is been said before but ocarina of time really changed the way I looked games. I feel that it is the best of all time. The 1st Metriod was exciting and Prime was allot of fun but the Zelda games always seemed more landmark worthy in my opinion.

@TigerSuperman: I played Super Metroid about four years ago for the first time. I have never in my life owned a SNES (played one a few times but it wasn't mine) and the only two Metroid games I'd played previously were Fusion and Prime. And I have no reservations about saying that Super Metroid is easily one of the greatest games I have EVER played. Yes I grew up with Nintendo, but I fail to see how that's relevant because unlike some people, I acknowledge when a popular Ninty theory (eg Ocarina of Time is the best Zelda) is wrong.

Top 10 for me, 3 more years for the true GOAT 20th Anny.

You are asking me to do the exact thing I have been doing every year when SM is mentioned. They either grew up with the game, Like Nintendo, or liked the SNES. It's literally been the same three things over and over. Most of the time anyway. The same can be applied to Mortal Kombat 1. People like MK1 either because they grew up with the game in arcades, on the Genesis, or like the Genesis, and thus like series that are known for being on the genesis. The difference is that SM is not very good, but MK1 is pretty bad. Almost as bad as SFII. Popular games in their day, but they were never really good in the first place. People go back and play those games and still think they are good when they clearly are not.

I also like how fans of all 3 complain about so many issues about each of them, yet still believe the game is great.

man if there was ever a time to tell people there's a new Metroid Game it would be today. But Knowing Nintendo, They're not making a new one.

There's no point in releasing a game that won't help them in most cases until the right time. Most likely, Retro is making the ew Metroid. But with TF so far, Metroid may be in trouble.

@TigerSuperman: Well I re read your above post and again, you said the game was never that good, that a lot of people complain about it and such, but didn't list any reasons that you personally feel it's not that good. I really am interested in why you think it's not a good game, I'm just trying to start a discussion.

And I personally don't know what complaints about Super Metroid you're talking about... I have very little complaints aside from maybe a few of the bosses were really hard, but that's more me being a newb than anything. And I don't think I've ever seen very many people complain about it, just give it praise.

Game was off the fucking hook. Beat that shit when I was 12. Man then FF3(6) came out the same year.

SNES was easily the greatest Nintendo console ever. Period.

Again, I have "seen" people give reasons for liking SM, and they all fall into the 3 categories in that post I am wondering you read. Although I did mention that not all probably did that (as I have no numbers) but seeing the same 3 things frequently for not just this game, but others over the years, I can't really pretend those don't play the majority of the likes for many games. Just with company names and game titles switched around.

With that said, I don't think Super Metroid is very good. I also think MK1 and SFII are also garbage. So from here, what is it you are looking for?
