Stadia is dead.

HAHAHAH at that guy that promoted it on these boards.

Google Stadia, the late 2019 streaming platform that promised to revolutionize gaming by letting users stream games without needing to own a powerful PC or console, is altering course, getting out of the game-making business and will now offer its platform directly to game publishers alongside offering Stadia Pro to the public.

The company is announcing the news today, though Kotaku began to hear rumblings from sources close to Stadia last week that Google’s service was heading for a major change. One games industry source told Kotaku that Google was canceling multiple projects, basically any games slated for release beyond a specific 2021 window, though they believed games close to release would still come out. Today brings some clarification.

Google will close its two game studios, located in Montreal and Los Angeles. Neither had released any games yet. That closure will impact around 150 developers, one source familiar with Stadia operations said. The company says it will try to find those developers new roles at Google.

Stadia isn't shutting down. However, it probably does speak to its slow and painful death

They aren't going to do anything more with the service:

In 2021, we’re expanding our efforts to help game developers and publishers take advantage of our platform technology and deliver games directly to their players. We see an important opportunity to work with partners seeking a gaming solution all built on Stadia’s advanced technical infrastructure and platform tools.

we will not be investing further in bringing exclusive content from our internal development team SG&E, beyond any near-term planned games.

Though not technically dead... yeah when a company says this, it's dead

Hopefully those developers affected will quickly find work again whether it be within Google or some other places elsewhere.

Phantom already tried, and Google had way more opportunities to be succesful here (though they forgot to support their platform with exclusive games)

Yeah remember the phantom?

It was that hideous console that looked like a PS5:

@R4gn4r0k: I think you're reading that wrong. They're abandoning their efforts to develop new games for the platform, they're still going to work on Stadia itself.

Although I do have to admit today's news is a bad sign of things to come.

Not an official shut down, but it sounds like a wind down to a full retreat, yes.

Stadia didn't even bother trying to be a Netflix of gaming... more like the Quibi of gaming.

Even if Google isn’t currently planning on shutting down Stadia at this very moment this kind of news just ultimately pushes things that way. Consumers see this and just don’t want to invest all that much into it because they perceive it as a failing product.

Sigh of relief honestly, I was mostly worried they'd think they need to be competitive by paying Rockstar a gazillion clams to make GTA6 Stadia exclusive.

Maybe too Google (by extension YouTube) realized that the gaming culture has noticeable divide in habits from after the Oregon Trail Generation gen-X cusp, that gamers who grew up not knowing what Disney Afternoon was much prefer to stream video of other people playing games than playing games themselves, and want to further monetize that.

Not really the same, it will be free as part of game pass. It would not be much more additional cost on MS's part.

Did anyone actually think Stadia wouldn't fail? We are at least 10-15, maybe even 20 years away from average worldwide internet being strong enough to support such a thing.

@R4gn4r0k: well if that doesn't put Stadia's future into perspective then I dunno what will, but yeah, in a day when people are spending their lockdown time playing games and streaming movies and sales and subscriptions clearly show that, for Stadia to not better its position that pretty much seals the platform's fate... not to mention for like half the year every other ad on YouTube was for Stadia, and that didn't help either

Yup, the thread above this is how Nintendo has reached yet another sales milestone;

Valve, Sony, MS, Nvidia, AMD... All boasting growth in the amount of gamers that buy from them.

_

Really now? All my Youtube ads were for a sh*tty fashion webstore, and I straight up refuse to buy any of my clothes online (Probably the last things I don't buy online: shoes & clothes).

I never had any Stadia ads, not even on the Stadia videos I watched.

I guess it is a fact that Youtube ads really like to show the same thing a hundred times.

Yeah I typed in:

"What games did Google make anyway" in google search and came up empty.

I know that one game they made with Rime and Deadlight studio Tequilla Works:

Gylt

But that was made by Tequilla, not by Google.

2 exclusives don't make a diff one way or the other. You're being disingenuous. Plus your philosophies about gaming have been dead wrong in the past. You don't like Nintendo or handheld gaming, and said they would fail hard before the Switch became popular. You also said high end gaming and tech was the only thing that mattered--wrong again.

Don't quit your day job.

So their internal developer is shutting down? Not too surprising. They're still focused on providing and growing the platform via third-party. I doubt the user-base is enough to cover the costs of developing new games.

I probably expect Stadia to stay, though it could probably shrink if interest doesn't go up.
