PS3 will sell well, especially when Blu-ray kicks in and in 2-3 years time PS3 will start selling a lot but for it to go near those numbers it would have to dominate the market and beyond. PS2 dominated, PS1 domainted. PS3 won't dominate because the competition is far too serious. compared to GC/Xb and N64 anyway.

Just look at it mathematically, the ps3 is selling about 165,000 units a week roughtly, now, that's about 8.5 million units a year meaning it'll take about 15 years assuming sales keep at their current rate. (Keep in mind that sales never do, the slow down as the system ages.)

Is sony really expecting to be supporting this system while they're supporting the PS5 or 6? It really doesn't seem reasonable.

Sony should realize the only way they would have even a chance at that numbers is if they drop the price of the PS3 to $300 this year and keep in BC to allure in former Sony fans.Flamestos
that's assuming they haven't migrated to nintendo's or M$ systems..

Microsoft hasn't even reached the original X-box numbers yet even though they're close so I doubt many have made the switch. Sony should be trying to get in good with the casuals and positioning themselves to be the second system to the Wii like Microsoft is trying but failing to do.

That just unrealistic, and that is putting things lightly. PS3 will be lucky to surpass 50 million mark (that is, before next generation hits).

Wii or DS are the only systems I see having that sort of chance, and even than, I do not see it happening.

I'm sure they'll reach that, just like they gave us 4D graphics and 120 frames per sec..... oh wait.

LOL... though the math doesn't really work there (even if you include Latin America, that's almost one console per person at the current population).

It's going to be a piece of cake when they reach mass market price.

It's only sold a few less than it's predecessor, and it's on track to pass it this year, and then it'll just be gains so yeah, it's had to attract a few new costomers at least.

Again, it would have to sell more than the PS2 by that time to make up for the slack. That'll be especially difficult when the next generation begins and the PS3 has to compete with its own successor.

Truth is, Sony caught lightning in a bottle with the PS2, and by talking up the PS3 they are hoping it'll happen again. At least thats the way I see it.

50 million tops, I predict.

WTH are Kaz and co smoking? 150 million? Way too ambitious. The PS3 is actually selling at a similar rate to the Gamecube..The Gamecube people.GabeNewellsPie

A $400 console is selling similar to a $100 console? When the PS3 reaches $250 and has better games, it will be flying off shelves IMO.

It'll be a long time before the PS3 reaches that price point. At least a couple years. By then we'll be getting details on the next gen.

And like I said at least a couple times before, Sony would still need to make up for considerable slack. It would have to sell countless more units per month than the PS2 ever did. (or rather, more than any console ever has)

PS3 will live strong for 10 years but I think everyone knows that the PS4 will be out in 3 years.

Hitman533
If the PS4 comes out in three years, I will just skip next gen then. I will just wait for the PS5 because three years is to soon for me. Anything sooner than 2013 is to soon for me. I am not getting another console until 2013, so I could live with it releasing in 2012, but any sooner and it will get skipped by me. Meaning I will be PC only next gen.

The PS3 will reach that target.

Its selling pretty good already, and when all those amazing exclusives come in 2009...

The 360 will be far behind the ps3.

LagSwitch

Heard this same thing about 2008. And 2007. And 2006.

360 was prophesised to be "far behind" the PS3 when it launched.

So how's that working out for you so far? :)

Sony has made it clear that a ten year cycle for the PS3 means exactly what it did for the PS2. That is they'll technically support for that time, but there's no guarantee that a successor won't be released during the latter half (siphoning off most developer support during its last few years).

[QUOTE="110million"]Yeah.. PS3 is selling pretty close to PS2 level.. in.. 6 or 7 more years.. who knows. Good for them I guess.-Renegade

I don't know.. they need a cheaper PS3 on the market if they ever exspect this to happen.

exactly, how much is ths ps2 now? like $200 canadian with guitar hero 3 so about $125-150 console only, i can not see the ps3 being this cheap or start to sell that well(to meet 150 mill) for at least 5 years, or maybe it will start havent games that aren't delayed for 2 years and make me wrong...

but again you never know

Sony just wanted to say something to trump Microsoft's claim that they will beat the PS3 in worldwide sales.

Truth be told, i don't see the PS3 passing 32 million.

That'd be N64 territory, and the PS3 doesn't have the software sales of N64 at this point.

I think they have to do a few things.

First, of course, is lower the price. Not so much to compete with the Wii but to put it back in the realm of a what a console should cost in the minds of the typical consumer

Second, they need to have games that build buzz! This 'just wait' crap really bit them

Third, they have to make this system smaller. I know that sounds silly, but that thing is a Hulk.

I can see that system flying off the shelves during Xmas time, every xmas time, but thats about it.

Its not happening. The Wii is selling too well and the X360 is also. There is not enough room in the marketplace for the Playstation to dominate like it did last generation. Plus M$ is in a better place to perform price drops.

No system will sell 150 million units this gen. Bank on it.
