Alot of people try to put JRPGs into a specific category and say what it can and can not be, so I want to try to get a general consensus of what system wars thinks a JRPG is.

Today I would classify a JRPG as any game in the RPG genre that emphasizes fantastical elements over immersive elements.
If Skyrim was made in Japan, it would still count as an WRPG for me.
This definition does not hold for games made in the '80s or the '90s.
The term RPG as applied to video games really has no meaning anymore. Both the east and west (yes even the west) fail at making true RPGs for the most part. And I'm fine with that.
To me an rpg is a game that is somewhat lengthy, attempts to provide a decent narrative and is mostly stat based with (usually) a strong emphasis on character growth, upgrades and some exploration.
A lot of that applies to many genres now. The lines are blurred.

Japanese Role Playing Game. Role Playing Game from Japan. I don't see how people are still debating over this.IAmNot_fun
There are many idiots who think they can define what a JRPG can be and what themes they can use. Thisis just a test to see how they define that logic.

Final Fantasy XIII is distinctly a JRPG.
Skyrim is distinctly a WRPG.
Both are styled in very unique ways.
Care to explain why my definition is incorrect?

define "japanese-style"
An RPG that appeals to certain conventions, generally including (but not limited to) an Anime-style presentation and a de-emphasis on player immersion.
JRPGs almost always have a linear story and stylized rather than realistic graphics.
rpg from japan....usually sucksmems_1224We have a winner, especially the sucks part--JRPGs and sucking are synonymous.

What then is Mount & Blade? TRPG?
peterw007
It falls under the banner of "Western," just like games from Poland or Sweden.
The differences is at least Sweden is a Western country. Turkey is not. Poland I don't know.Alot of hater spewing opinions that they think are facts on this topic. I mean jeez people what did jrpgs ever do to you.

good story has nothing to do with a genre, and a good story causes immersion. like a good book. the problem with people is that they go "JRPG is an RPG with linear story and anime look. EVERYTHING ELSE IS A WRPG, I DON'T CARE IF THERE ARE 5 BILLION TYPES OF JAPANESE RPGS, THEY'RE WRPGS". and that's just stupid. it's practically an offense how broad the stereotype is. to the point a good game like demon's/dark souls can't be credited for being japanese because "OH IT'S NOT ANIME SO IT'S A WRPG"[QUOTE="peterw007"]

I think immersion more has to do with how plausible the world itself can be.
J-pop music, chibi-style characters, and a very anime-esque world really doesn't feel all that plausible.
A mature fantasy world with an atmospheric soundtrack feels more plausible.
I can't believe this is actually generating a discussion.IAmNot_fun

i can spend dozens of hours playing a tales game, wanting to know what happens next, or how the next city will look like or the enemies, or which new sidequest i can complete. that's immersion. it has nothing to do with setting or styIe.[QUOTE="finalfantasy94"]

really. your asking for something plausible in fictional media. mostpieces of fictinal media isint. Mass effect dosesint seem plausible at all but I still get sucked in cause I enjoy the tale and characters.

BTW:
while you are at it could you define "player immersion" you are completely coming out of left feild trying to apply such open ended and undefined terms to your definiton.

Mass Effect seems like a very believable science-fiction world.
I could definitely see the future of humanity living in the Mass Effect universe.
It doesn't matter if it's fiction or not. It's about making the world seem believable.
It's about creating a world that mirrors our past societies or models our visions of a future society...one that prefers intricacy over simplification.
You can't tell me that The Witcher feels less plausible than Disgaea.

so because it's comical, it can't be immersive? that's like saying monty python movies have no immersion because the setpieces are absurd. Please Log In to post.
