Am I reading this right? Skyrim with a heavy story? :?

Skyrim success motivates Remedy to stick with story-heavy games

"There's obviously an audience that enjoys story."

Skyrim's blockbuster success has motivated Alan Wake developer Remedy to continue to create story-driven games.

Bethesda Game Studios' fantasy role-playing game exceeded all sales expectations when it launched last November, shifting millions of units and generating hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.

Skyrim far outstripped the success of previous Elder Scrolls games, including Morrowind and Oblivion.

No exclusive PS3 or Xbox 360 game sold more copies than Bethesda's formidable open world fantasy romp Skyrim last year.

On PC, Skyrim outsold all other PC games 3:1 during November, and is Steam's fastest ever selling game.

In terms of money made worldwide, Skyrim was the second most successful game of 2011. Only Modern Warfare 3 will have finished higher, which puts Skyrim ahead of even FIFA 12 and Battlefield 3. Bethesda had shipped more than 10 million copies of Skyrim within the game's first month on sale.

It is this gargantuan success that has convinced Remedy, creator of Max Payne and Alan Wake, that it's on the right track with its complex stories.

"The Call of Dutys and the Battlefields are doing extremely well in the US," Remedy head of franchise development Oskari Hakkinen told Eurogamer. "Those are the type of games that are in popular demand, so it's really positive to see Skyrim and other RPG games that have a lot of story in be successful as well.

"It gives us motivation to do story-driven games, because there's obviously an audience out there of people who enjoy story as well.

"Seeing something like that being successful, we don't need to consciously try to make our stories any less than they are, not try to make them any simpler. Our stories are not necessarily complicated, but our games are very story heavy. And, just to see games like Skyrim succeed, it's like, let's not try to make it any less story-heavy."

Alan Wake, which launched on Xbox 360 in 2010 and last week on Steam, is a Twin Peaks-****thriller set in an American town called Bright Falls. Writer Alan Wake embarks on an existential journey after his wife disappears and he becomes the chief suspect.

As he battles against a mysterious entity known as the Dark Presence, Wake discovers a manuscript he recognises as his own work - but he can't remember writing it, and he can't work out why it foretells upcoming events.

"That's our thing. It's in our DNA," Hakkinen said. "We always want to take the story-telling in video games forward. Let's continue to do that and not try to make any simpler stories."

It doesn't matter if Skyrim has a good or bad story. If it motivates Remedy to make story-driven games, I'm all in. I like a good story to go with my games so if they focus on story rather than MP or retarded add-ons, they got my money.

I love the books. it's amazing for a game that people always wag on about not having a story, it's got a hell of a lot of books in it.

Good...One thing Remedy never disappointing me with is a good story but that's mostly down to Sam Lake. I think most gaming devs should hire better writers that goes for you Guerrilla Games.

Guess I'm the only one who found Skyrim's main story at least reasonably entertaining.

Nothing remarkable but it shuttled me from place to place pretty well and featured some interesting characters and cool interactions based on what order I complete certain activities. If nothing else I can say I thought was much better than Oblivion's story.

honestly the only disappointing thing about the main story was the final battle and that you couldn't do more in that last area

skyrim isnt about one story. its about dozens of different ones

But it does have a main storyline does it not? The dozens of different ones are sidequests and have little or no impact on the main story itself. That's the problem with skyrim the interesting stories are short sidequests.

it has two main stories. all the side quests add to the lore and the world. so they're still part of the game's story.

Skyrim is so far beyond any other game ever made in terms of beauty and an over all feeling of epicness to it, and while it did have a fantastic main quest story and some of the other major quest lines had great stories it's nothing to cry home to mother about.

Its not so much the main story its the people's story, the history, and all the lore that makes the world of TES so ingaging and interesting.

They did a good job telling the story too. Most games i play, like COD and Mirrors Edge, are very hard to follow. However, I was able to follow Skyrims story quite well.

Baldur's Gate has a lot of grinding in it. Planescape is just an interactive novel.

The story isn't what makes Skyrim so good... It the adventure side of it. The whats around the next corner feel. Graphics and world really help to draw you in. Melee, bows and magic will never get old. Story just helps to sell it a little better. Give you an idea on why your going out to do something. If it sounds exciting it gives you a drive and it all boils down on how epic the place described in the story is when you get there. If there is a boring place that had an epic story to it... It wouldn't make the game good. Epic locations > Epic Story

idiots, Skyrims sucess was due to marketing campign and nothing more.

It's not like they everyone who bought the game know what they were getting, they look at duh awsome live action trailers that had 0% of gameplay and people were like woh that looks cool. Sure some people ended up liking that game but that was only AFTER they bought it. Most people didn't have a clue what they were getting into when they purchased the game.

ZOMG, books! You k'now...it's not like there is a endless library of english books and novels in real life. Yeah just stick to fictional lore inside a videogame a couple pages at a time for your literary needs. Yeah, that kind of literature definetly makes you an educated and refined person in the upper layers of society.

This, in a way. I don't think Skyrim's success was attributed to its story. Conversely, I don't think Alan Wake's relative failure is attributed to its amazing and variable gameplay.

Its funny that you call everyone here idiots when you have no way to prove this. I guess it being an already established franchise and a generaly good game had nothing to do with it.
