2022. maybe even 2023. 2017-2022......seems about right. assuming they are sticking with the whole hybrid thing (big assumption mind).
there is nothing currently available that would make a meaningful upgrade from what is in the switch. sure there is more powerful mobile hardware but its just not a big enough jump yet.
Nvidia themselves dont have anything new ready for that segment. they pretty much gave up on tegra a while back it seems. so custom work will be needed to make something suitable for nintendo. to make it worthwhile to actually release a successor.
again, assuming we are looking at linear advancement from nintendo this time (wouldnt bet on it) i think both Nvidia and nintendo would want to deliver the full ampere feature set in a handheld. solid ray tracing, good rasterisation and DLSS 2.0+ (the latter being perfect for nintendos requirements specifically).
upgrades to the CPU too of course. more efficient cores. more cores maybe. or fewer/faster cores if they can fit it within the power budget.
depending on how effective they can make DLSS and what the caveats are, if any, nintendo may be thinking "take a PS5 game, run it at 720P with the highest settings you can fit and let DLSS get it to 4K. what hardware do we need for that?".
of course, as it's nintendo, they may also just go in a completely different direction again. thye could stick with the horsepower of the switch, add a modem, shrink the SOC to 7nm and make a phone. or they could just make a traditional console (very unlikely). or they may decide they miss the 3DS and release a new one with an upgraded version of the pica 200 (also very unlikely).
but yeah. 2022. i dont think there is much point in a switch pro next year either.
