I am running an asus p5k with 8 gigs 1000 mhz ddr2 ram, 3.5 gig core 2 duo, 1 gig radeon hd 4980, 700w psu, and a 7200 rpm hdd. I got all that for $550 along with a 1680x1050 acer 22" monitor included in that $550. PC gaming is not as expensive as I was led to believe. Glad I had a nice stockpile of games I couldn't run that I can now take advantage of (Crysis, Crysis: Warhead, Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, L4D, L4D2).

But what about when crysis was released? how much did it cost to build a computer to run it at highest settings, 60 fps, and a decent Resolution...? alot.

On a serious note, my PC is so outdated that it has troubles running source engine at medium. I've been to afraid to spring for a new PC in fear of the expenses, hopefully I can get a rig as good as yours for cheap.

Yeah but it is still the best looking game and engine. And now I can play it and all the other great pc games and better pc versions of consoles games for the price of a console.

Im glad you can, but I felt it needed to be added that At release it wasn't cheap to run crysis as its best.

I definitely agree with you on that one. But until recently it wasnt possible to run crysis maxed at all. And now that it can be maxed finally, it is cheap to max it. So essentially I was like you with a 360 and ps3 but i have now turned em into a nice rig (mainly for sc2, diablo 3, crysis 2)

Well cut the cost of the monitor out or add the cost of an hdtv to consoles and they break about even. Without the monitor, the rig was 420. Just saying.

Yeah, I just bought Crysis recently. But I can't even do anything on the main menu, not to mention play. My PC is a crappy old laptop from 2007's after all. :( But mine can run Fallout 3 on low setting and L4D2 on lowest setting possible though. :P BTW, is cell on PS3 a game engine? Isn't it more like OS? :(

Depends what you're playing and when you've built the system. Seeing as the most resource intensive PC game (Crysis, the "benchmark" for PC's), came out nearly 2.5 years ago, building a rig NOW that's capable of playing it maxed obviously won't hit the wallet as hard as it would of even 12 months ago, for example. When the next wave of graphical/physics powerhouse games start showing up (whenever that is...), it'll be another story, yet again.

How is it irrelevant? The pc is meant to do more than game. Course 360 can be used for that as well, but of course Microsoft fights relentlessly hard against it. Mainly because it involves using their competitors operating system.

Erm... Windows costs around $100CDN, and if you're a student, as low as $30CDN.

Cases run about $30+.

TC said nothing about running maxed AA and AF. Just every setting on Very High (graphics settings), which I do on a 4870 at 19x12 and get 30-40FPS.

Most serious PC gamers can turn all the settings up on affordable hardware, the problem is doing it at a decent resolution.

Personally I would rather turn the visual settings down to keep the resolution up, I value image clarity more than extra eye candy.

Or, I have a heavily overclocked card and CPU. Heavy, heavy firefigts, I get a dip to mid-low 20's, but the vast majority is run at the FPS stated.

At those resolutions (1920x1200), AA becomes less of a concern. You could probably get away with turning it off altogether. AA is mostly important in the lower resolutions like mine (1440x900).

Agreed. On Crysis I either run at 2xAA for that resolution, or mostly just none at all. The difference isn't too notable for the hit in performance.

Please show me how you made this PC for only $550 and where from? Including a monitor no doubt, I find this very hard to believe.

That still is expensive. Thats almost double the cost of a ps3

Most people that say they maxed out Crysis are running the game at 20-30 FPS especially at very high. Here's Cysis Warhead running at 30FPS with a 4890 at 1920x1200 with gamer mode settings, that would he the high settting if it was Crysis. Note Warhead runs much better than the original Crysis, so I would expect the game to run at a lower frame rate than than Warhead. I'm not saying 30 FPS is bad I just wish the game would keep a constant frame rate like most console games do.
