Sauce: http://wholesomegamer.com/2015/05/20/playstation-vita-and-ps4-price-cuts-may-be-coming-this-year/

Looking at a $50 price drop for the PS4 to $350 and a $110 price drop for the Vita putting the Vita at a $89 which seems ridiculously low. Though that pricing could indicate a new strategy for the Vita as more of a PS4 accessory rather than just a standalone device.

My opinion? A PS4 price drop is very likely this year. I expect both the Xbox One and PS4 to drop by at least $50, if not $100 depending on what the other does. The Vita price drop is likely as well, but I highly doubt it'll be a > 50% drop from it's current price. That seems ridiculous. Though if they want to put the Vita as more of a PS4 accessory, I can see them taking a hit on the hardware to push more PSN sales and PS4 sales.

Thoughts?

Considering Sony doesn't make games for the PSV anymore, having it as a glorified accessory makes sense. What a fucking waste of technology.

I could see it for the PS4, sort of seems inevitable.

Vita... That's a sharp plummet in price. If it happens I'm very interested to see what their plan is after that.

If the Vita drops down to $90, then that'll be the first handheld I've bought in 10+ years.

@Wasdie: The PS4 is selling too well, and still has a crap-ton of momentum, to warrant a price drop. The only way Sony would do that if the XB1 starts outselling it in consecutive months (which hasn't happened yet).

Vita makes its money off digital games, so this could be great.

I'm predicting the PS4 at $299 in time for the holidays.

It will be two years old, and a $50 drop is an unnecessary half-measure.

@StormyJoe: It's not about current momentum, it's about keeping that momentum going. If they keep at $399 and Microsoft drops to $350 or $299, they'll lose some serious momentum.

Vita, yes. PS4? No. It's selling well. You don't drop the price when sales are high.

Man.....I already called this out.

Will PS4 be blown away this holiday without a 349 drop?

@playharderfool said:

I think so.

But personally I think Sony is precisely planning to do just that this winter at the next PSX event. They are obviously planning on delivering some big info and they are avoiding the gamescon event all together to hold something to their chest for this even in October. It would be a genius move and a perfect timeline and platform to launch such an announcement.

.... Do you think, as I do, Sony will infact announce a WW $349 price reduction at the PSX event in October?

A $110 price drop for the Vita would be amazing but unlikely. Maybe theyre able to make Vitas dirt cheap since they ditched the Oled screen model. Its a great portable system for playing PSP and PS One classics.

It makes perfectly good sense. In the US, core gamers have adopted the PS4 but now sales are being affected by bundle deals and price cuts by the competition which means non-hardcore gamers are where the market is shifting to. Sony knows consumers are on the fence.

I would def consider a $300 bundle during the holidays. At a cheap price point I'd like to at least get bloodborne and then wait until a good exclusive/pc+ps4 co-op/multiplayer game to come along in 2016 to pick up ps+. Hoping H-hour comes at some point and maybe news of co-op for uncharted 4 would be nice.

Sony probably is betting to make back some money off the memory cards from people who bought the Vita at the fire sale price. I imagine a lot of people are in for sticker shock when they see the price on those cards after buying their kids that cheap handheld for the holidays. Why Sony didn't go with a standard memory still confounds me to this day and probably costed them the handheld market.

@Wasdie: Most likely will happen in the Fall. I expect both the Wii U and the XBox One to drop their prices as well before the end of the system. Expect $300 XB1 and $250 Wii U bundles for the holidays.

Why do you assume worldwide price drop? It only states US price drop. In the US, it's NPD sales were abysmal last month and it lost to the much cheaper xbone.. They drop the price in the US only, where they can afford to, to keep sales up. Every other countries price can remain and it will continue to be the sales leader

In the US, you would want to drop the price of the system to sell as many CoDs as possible. The xbone could be a legit threat to sell more games

They need to shrink the ps4's chip before they can do that without losing money. 16nm isn't ready yet and 20nm had some issues apparently.

I don't know if PS4 drop is inevitable, but it wouldn't at all be surprising to see them knock $50 off. Would be sweet if we got a new/slim model, but it might be a year early for that .

Now the Vita on the other hand, I can't believe they didn't drop the price already. They should have made it $149 or even $129 like a year (or more) ago to try and boost sales. I'm not sure I believe $89, going directly from $199 to $89 seems crazy.
