Genre: Action Adventure
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo

Release Date: TBA 2011
Exclusively on: Wii
PEGI: RP

http://wiki.guildwars.com/images/thumb/f/f7/User_Xerir_Triforce.gif/45px-User_Xerir_Triforce.gif

"The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword introduces full motion control enabled by the Wii MotionPlus accessory, which synchronizes player movements with Link's actions while offering intuitive play control.

With the Wii MotionPlus accessory, every movement of Link's sword matches the player's motion with exact precision. If players motion left to right, Link swings from left to right. The precision play control is applied to enemies as well, as players must contemplate strategy when battling opponents that actively try to defend against attacks."

STORY DETAILS

"In this Zelda, Link is a little boy born into a land above the clouds called Skyloft."

"One day, he learns there is a land below the clouds ruled by evil forces"

"However, the revelation prompts a series of events which forces him to go to the land beneath the clouds"

The reason he goes down is in the title--it's the Skyward Sword

The sword possesses intelligence, and will assume the semi-human form in the teaser poster shown last year.

It's the "master sword."

The Skyward Sword will become the Master Sword, apparently.

The sky is also very important to the game, apparently..

OFFICIAL TRAILER

GAMEPLAY IMPRESSIONS

IGN

"We're very relieved to report that the Motion Plus controls work sensationally accurately with Link's Sword. The in-game sword followed our arm's movements precisely as we waved it about. Better yet, directional slashes are recorded accurately on enemies and scenery.

We also fought a couple of giant, armoured flowers with jaws that snapped open and shut. The only way you can kill them is by slashing the sword so that it cuts through the open mouth, rather than bouncing harmlessly off the armoured jaws. To mix things up the mouths open either vertically or horizontally, and you must match your sword swing accordingly."

KOTAKU

"Then I shot a two-minute video to show you the game in action. Good stuff. Sword controls were superb, and closer to 1:1 than I expected (note the little leans of the sword when I tilt my hand). Bowling bombs feels right. So no complaints on controls, an almost-perfect button layout"

Kotaku demo

WIRED

"I tried playing around with the controls. Although they didn't work so well in the onstageZelda demo, thanks to wireless interference, everything felt polished and perfect when I played. Swinging diagonally caused Link's sword motion to match; when I put my hand down to the ground and swung upward in a giant arc, so did Link."

GAMEXPLAIN

"After the somewhat lackluster demonstration during the conference itself, I was pretty eager to see if the "technical difficulties" that series creator, Shigeru Miyamoto was fighting against on-screen were problems with the game itself. I'm happy to report that this couldn't be further from the truth.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword plays like a dream, a fluffy, copacetic dream of Dekubabas, Bokoblins, and Stalfos, all rendered in technicolor glory. The art ****employed this time around appears to be a subtle mix of the cartoony wonderland we saw in Wind Waker, and the slightly darker, adult fantasy world of Twilight Princess. It all comes together beautifully in motion. Distant objects take on the feel of a Van Gogh painting, with enemies coming to vivid life as they approach you. The art ****just fits the Zelda franchise like a glove, and I was happy to see the whole thing come together."

It's the other way around...Gameplay is a bit same old, but it does have new stuff like the flying beetle and motion plus shooting and slicing. The Art Direction....is Win.

I really like the art and it has me sold on the thing most Wii games suck at. Character models. Environments need some work but the gameplay looked good. Basically typical Zelda, I like it.

I prefer the more-mature graphics (Twilight Princess) over the kiddiegraphics (Wind Waker).

I love the art direction. It brings Link back to his roots. No more kid cartoon, no more dark and gritty.

Let's not forget Link's original design.

It looks okay, gameplay looks promising with the Wii Motion Plus.....but I don't like the graphics at all. I'm a bigger fan of the Wind Waker link than this one.

Looks like they tried to go for a compromise between Windwaker and TP as far as art direction goes. Looking pretty good so far.

I'm not loving the art direction. But id say itll grow on me like the WW's cel shading did. Plus this way in a few years it'll still look nice. Graphically the WW has aged better than TP

Okay, some short thoughts:

  • The artstyle is beautiful - I have thought before that a cel-shaded look with adult Link would be great, and it is.
  • The controls seem good, and if they really integrate them into the puzzle design (like with that eye thing) they'll be a good shot in the arm for the franchise. I was secretly worried about the problems onstage, but I doubt that Nintendo would go this far on development of a fricking Zelda game if the controls were subpar.
  • What they showed seemed quite dry. Obviously this is the first gameplay, so I can't really complain yet. I'm just hoping that there will be a really fleshed-out story/characterization element to this, as with Majora's Mask, and there should be lots of sidequests that go hand-in-hand with that. But I'm just reading off my wishlist at this point...

I wasn't expecting the art style to be like Wind Waker's and it threw me back at first. But I have to say, I'm liking it. I think it was a good decision to go with this art direction on a console like Wii. If they would have tried going realistic, then it wouldn't match up well to the power of 360 and PS3. I think it's going to be a much bigger game, and I loved WW, so I'm probably going to love this.

i mean if they had to do motion controls, i think they did a good job of it (even if the stage demo had hiccups)

I'm liking the game so far. One thing I'm wondering is if you can hit an enemy with your shield I know you can thrust it forward I would like to try and hit an enemy with the shied.

I also like the weopons so far.

Well from the demo it sure looked like Fail(controls looked so unresponsive especially the lag with the sword fighting). I didn't care for the art style or the graphics. I'm not a Zelda fan so maybe that is why. Not going to purchase this game.

Yeah, Link's character model is really a thing of beauty.

Yup, as far as feel goes nintendo did what I wanted, its more adult in links appearance and world but its happy, not dark dingy, devoid of colour and derpressing. So the killed the art. But the environments need work imo.

The controls were what worried me, but it looks like they work pretty well. I perrsonally like the art style, it's the best direction to go in with the Wii IMO.

And the name doesn't bother me at all.

Looks like a solid game.

this is all i wanted to hear from IGN

"Rest assured Zelda's gameplay absolutely cuts Red Steel 2's swordplay to pieces!"

love the artstyle, just as i wanted, a wind waker + Twilight princess style.

i would like to see more of the story and as many infos as possible, but thats hardly a complain , more like a wish :D

Shouldn't you add a link to the Kotaku demo?

Hearing that it controls wonderfully is fine, but after seeing the onstage demo go so wrong it's much better to see the game working right in motion.

I simply astounded. It pisses me off people couldn't turn off their cells during the gameplay shown at the conference, but whatever. The graphics are simply gorgeous, I love them. It's like Twilight Princess meets Wind Waker, the perfect marriage in artistic beauty. Link himself looks incredible, best character model I've ever seen on the Wii. I wish they'd say something about the story, but we'll find out eventually. For now, it's my number one most anticipated game.

again, go to kotaku. There's vids there of people playing the new zelda. It's even more fluid 1:1 than red steel 2 was, and red steel 2 had near perfect swrod controls.

I like the art style but I fear it might imply the game is going to be... what's the right word... kiddie (for lack of a better word). I like the dark tone of twilight princess a lot. I'm guessing this is going to be a happy-go-lucky type like Wind Waker. I'm sure it'll be awesome either way though.

Well from the demo it sure looked like Fail(controls looked so unresponsive especially the lag with the sword fighting). I didn't care for the art style or the graphics. I'm not a Zelda fan so maybe that is why. Not going to purchase this game.

you realize that that was becuase of some kind of interuption? out side that it plays like a dream

I wasn't talking about the bow and arrow. I was talking about the sword fighting. Why didn't move have this same interruption with the Sorcery? It sure looked more like bad lag to me. I own a Wii and the contols are so unresponsive it can be rediculous.

Watch Kotaku's demo, it controls much better. I'm pretty sure the move didn't lag because the PS3 tracks it's movements in a different way.
