http://www.mirror.co.uk/tech/sonys-new-playstation-vr-headset-8940998

Dr Allamby adds: "VR headsets contain two small digital screens, each projected at one eye, creating a stereoscopic effect to create an illusion of depth.

"The closeness of these to the eyes over intense long periods of use could lead to severe vision strain or neurological issues and needs to be better understood."

"And because VR prevents our eyes from naturally focusing at a far distance, this too can speed-up the progression of myopia."

Why are you singling out PSVR? I'm sure this is a potential issue for all VR headsets. And it's only just that: it could be detrimental to eye health. We won't know the long term effects until people have used these devices for an extended period of time.

This is one reason I'm sceptical of VR... especially for gaming. I'm sure the experience is very cool, but I just can't see it being a viable option to wear these things for long periods. It's just not natural.

Anyway we'll see I guess. But I'm certainly in no rush to jump in yet.

Some of you probably aren't old enough to remember the news in the 80's and 90's regurgitating stories about how videogaming and sitting too close to a TV would cause damage to your vision. This is literally the same exact thing. Supposedly, every gamer in this forum shouldn't be able to throw a baseball accurately past the distance from their couch to their TV but here we all are.

Don't care still getting it

Other people complained about the Virtual Boy doing eye damage or certain games causing seizures none of that stuff ever affects me.

It just doesn't hurt me at all i have very powerful eyes and don't get headaches from gaming (ive been gaming so much its impossible to affect me negatively)

Like the 3D effect in 3DS?

I'm sure you follow their guidelines-

  • Take a 10 to 15 minute break every hour, even if you don't think you need it.

And we find out 3DS can kill people with pace makers

  • Do not operate the Nintendo DS within 9 inches of a pacemaker while using the wireless feature.
  • If you have a pacemaker or other implanted medical device, do not use the wireless feature of the Nintendo DS without first consulting your physician or the manufacturer of your medical device.

SONY wins AGAIN.

Certainly, @KBFloYd would never think of using something as dangerous as a 3DS, right?

Yeah, you see that processor unit that you need to attach your PSVR onto and the attach the processor unit onto your PS4, it's an eye sore. And their fans were complaining about external hard drives that you could attach on Xbox One and complaining about the Xbox power brick which is gone on the Xbox One S models.

Thanks for posting this vid so people will know what that PS4 Super Ultra Mini Slim unit thing I was talking about. I swear they're infatuated with making their hardware look like it could be stacked on top of each other. But man, wow yeah that's a lot of wires hanging all around your body. I wouldn't be surprise if there will be reports about users really getting into the VR games and twist and turn until these wires wraps arounds them and they trip and worse, those wires wraps around their necks and chokes them. Lol. I mean if people could fling Wiimotes & Move doggles onto their TVs, anything could happen.

What about long-term damage?

Because they emit HEV light (also called blue light), staring at phone and tablet screens may actually harm our eyes permanently. HEV light is that portion of the visible light spectrum that comprises light with the shortest wavelengths, which carry the greatest potential to damage living tissue.

Oh come on... It's not only PSVR which is guilty on that front. I mean, Sony will be inflicting all kinds of eye damage with their substandard 4k pixels on the Pro too, but that doesn't even get a mention.

Nice! Mine is all stock but will be getting some upgrades too. I'm using brown magpul mags and plan on some brown furniture in the future.

Back on topic. I want to see the long term effects of the hunk of shit cardboard VR with cellphones. Vision effects and radiation.

I have always said Depth of Field in games is evil and should be banned. The whole thought of DoF in a VR game is just horrendous, my eyes are melting at the thought of it. While we're at it Motion Blur needs to be banned as well.

If only Sony had found a way to provide you with a VR headset that wasn't illuminated and wasn't on your face!

... sh*t, I think they did it! My eyes are saved! Games look kind of... off... though

It's nice to see that there are people looking into said issues. Do you think there would be technical solutions to those problems being researched and implemented as well or is it just going to lead to a warning label in the manuals of headsets? Also, what would the theoretical solutions be? Eye scanning software, recognizing eye strain and giving you an overlay warning?

Pretty sure doing something sedentary like playing videogames for extended periods already poses risk to your long term health. Also, eye strain and melatoninin/dopamine sleep disruption has been a issue for awhile already. How is this any different?
