PS5 Slim teardown!

After watching this, I kind of like the Slim more now. But it looks like most of the changes are aesthetic. Aside from the size, I like the modular aspect and how easy it is to install the drive and the ssd. Also like the additional usb c in the front. And actually, it doesn’t look like you really need the vertical stand. What do you think, SW? Will you be getting one?

Nope. Prefer my regular PS5. No reason to get this.

I heard they are working on an ultra slim.

I don't get it, it's still huge and fugly.

I wonder if Sony just completely went overkill on the original model in terms of cooling (and the size needed to host the cooler) and have realised over the years that they could have made it smaller.

It's the same SOC as the revised original PS5 model (remember that drama around the "inferior heatsink"?). So just smaller mobo and updated cooler again. The shape of the PSU has also changed (same output though). A bit of extra storage. Yeah it's fine. Just make sure you get the model that fits your use case. Upgrading a Digital slim with a disc drive is pricey.

If I was buying a PS5 then this is the version I would get. A bit of extra storage and it's smaller and it costs the same soooo....why not?

If I already had a PS5 though then "upgrading" to this is pointless. It's not an upgrade in any way. Unless you are getting it for free, I wouldn't bother.

If you have a PS5, no reason to buy this slim. Just need to keep it clean and neat for whenever the Pro version comes out to do the swap😉

If i got a ps5, this is the one I’d get. Smaller - though the design is still an eyesore - and digital. Having said that I have too much to play on XsX at the mo, and the last thing I need is a bigger back catalogue.

Fair argument, I think we’re getting PS6 around 2029 or 2030 contrary to what the leaked documents said. A Pro version would make kinda sense to be released around 2025. Too many Pro rumors are all over the place nowadays.

I mean if Microsoft isn't doing it, what incentive would Sony have to make one?

A Pro doesn't make much economic sense. It would cost more than the base and pricing is already a struggle. This does not even factor in the need for a meaningful performance boost.

Only reason to upgrade from my og ps5 is a pro the changes are not enough to justify.

@Chutebox: Would they? Price is high enough as it is and with the current economic climate I have trouble seeing that happen. Sure there will be a core group that would double-dip but they're probably a minority and not worth the trouble of developing the pro version for.

PS5 is selling well enough as it is, so with Microsoft not making a pro version, Sony doesn't have much of an incentive.

Disappointed to see that it's not a die shrink. They need to make a version that is more efficient so they can ditch the liquid metal.

I like the modular aspect of it. Def a step in the right direction, but this should have been the design from day 1.

Also still looks dumb. Wish it was more like a basic rectangular prism.

Anyone find any excuse as to why the disc is the same price as the current PS5 disc and the digital increased by $50 or was this a cash grab by Sony? Bueller? Bueller?

And the original ps5 didn't even look like a high end piece of tech to begin with.

@hardwenzen: it’s a bit awkward of a look but with my plates I don’t mind it. Maybe I’m just used to it. Can’t believe Sony is charging for a horizontal stand for the Slim after raising the digital price though. But I guess seeing all of the layoffs at different Sony studios it makes sense, they must be bleeding money.

Never thought I would say this, but I prefer the regular PS5. The slim looks like a cheap PS5 knockoff you'd find on Wish.com

Yea, I think if they do a Pro, it would have to be next year otherwise it would be weird releasing it so late in the cycle. If the leaked Microsoft documents are true, then Xbox won't get a Pro, just a slim. I think that would be in Sony's benefit, since they can give gamers a choice.

I've never been bothered by the PS5 design though.

For me the wait continues... Oddly enough if they announced a vita 2 I'd pre-order immediately.

I don't see a reason to change from the original PS5. No performance upgrades.

The plug and play nature of the disc drive is genius. Easy to mount and dismount.

Hope the PS5 Pro ver is detachable and compatible the same accessory. I am interested in the Pro and thinking of buying if it priced right and definitely helps if Sony could offer a competitive pricing by only releasing a digital ver with the disc drive addon sold separately.

Personally the original PS5 Digital ver looks really sleek but Disc edition is ugly as fk. same goes with the Slim PS5 the Disc version looks so bad.

It looks like a Chinese knockoff of a PS5 console, the horizontal stand it comes with looks super cheap, and having to spend $30 extra for a vertical stand is just scummy of them. It makes me happy to have a phat PS5, even though I rarely touch it.

And it's not that much smaller.... Wondering why they went this route as well. Cost saving for Sony likely.

The slim isn't worth the hassle of selling or trading in my og ps5 just to get a slightly slimmer machine. The only way it would be worth it is if it had better specs.

You're right, it isn't "slim". It's just now a normal size for a console and it still looks awful. The original Xbox looks better for its time, then the slim does for now.

Not PS, but I think the Xbox One S had a slightly faster CPU.

well xbox raised there series s 50 bucks and made it black.

inflation is still rising. sony cant raise 500 ps5 disc because xbox has not raised series x or they would have.

The Series S isn't a slim, it is it's own thing.

I don't think this is a "slim", Sony hasn't officially called it that. It also might not be small enough to be called a slim, nor is it particularaly a redesign like the slim models.

I have to admit, the first three PS slims were really good looking.

The black Series S isn't a replacement. It's just a 1TB version. But you can still get the original.

The disc drive for the PS5 is really expensive. So while the digital hasn't had its price raised in the UK, the disc drive add on is £100 which is massive for just a disc reader. You can get high end Blu Ray re-writers for that price. My Blu Ray drive feels really solid and high quality.

@HalcyonScarlet: even if the black Series S was the only S model, it’s double the SSD for that $50. And the white model now comes with 3 months of Game Pass. What’s Sony giving consumers for $50 extra considering they’re saving money on this model? Nothing! And they want $30 for the vertical stand! Coupled with the PS+ increase and studio layoffs, something is going wrong at Sony.

I think the new PS SSD is also 1TB, but that's not as significantly bigger than the regular one which was 850 or something?

Series S has worse components than Series X, making it weaker and cheaper than X. Weird that you didn't already know that.
