PS5 outsells Switch in Japan for 5th straight week

As the PS5 Stock situation has less of an effect on consumers' ability to purchase the system, sales of the console have continued to grow in Sony's native country of Japan. It's now topped the region's hardware sales chart for five weeks in a row, with this latest round of purchases meaning over 2.5 million consoles have been sold since launch. That's only counting the disc version; include the digital edition and Sony is closing in on three million sales.

From 13th February 2023 to the 19th, 75,518 PS5 systems were sold to buyers in Japan. That's almost triple the amount of sales the country's second best-selling console of the week brought in — the Nintendo Switch OLED at 29,457. When you group the two families of systems together (PS5 disc version + digital edition and Nintendo Switch OLED + standard Switch + Switch Lite), Sony sold a combined total of 88,833 units while Nintendo distributed 48,896 Switch systems. Again, we're talking almost double the total of its closest competitor.

As for the games, Hogwarts Legacy once again sits on top with 36,958 copies sold. New titles in the top 10 include Wild Hearts and Tales of Symphonia Remastered, which appear second and eighth respectively when Sony consoles are taken into account. The Bandai Namco remaster sold best on Nintendo Switch in Japan.

This is expected. Nintendo is saving stock for Zelda in May. And scalping is big in Japan for PS5. Thats why all its games are selling poorly. I mean come on, how do 75k people buy a PS5 and not buy a game with it? WTF?

Doesn't this bother our sheep? The only country where Playstation supposedly had no chance of winning against the Switch, is currently demolishing it ever since you could actually buy the system. Even the mega casual gamers that mostly play on mobile are beginning to wake up, and ask themselves what is the point of buying the Switch, when it can't handle 3D graphics?

well to be fair Switch has sold like 30million units in JP, so every 4th person in there has one, it gotta slow at some point lol

Not surprising. The Switch is entering its 7th year on the market after all and considering how many it has sold most everyone is bound to have gotten one so far. It’s done extremely well for itself. There may be a bump when Tears of the Kingdom comes out but the time has arrived for Nintendo to ready up its successor.

When i see or hear of the P L A Y S T A T I O N 5, i think of wealth, prestige, class, intelligence. These are all the traits that us, gamers in North America that own a Playstation 5, have. Japan wants to be like us, and from my point of view, this is perfectly understandable.

Switch is 6 years old it’s hardly a win haha most people who wanted one already bought it and ps5 has only recently started appearing on shelf’s. Glad it’s more available now though

Coming from someone who expected the X to perform noticeably better than the PS5, and the one that told me time and time again that Halo splitscreen coop will only take 3 months after launch. Phantasy alright, i am literally talking to the one who invented it.

The Series X does perform noticeably better than the PS5, so not sure of your point. As for 3 months for split-screen co-op timeframe, I would have not idea how long it would take.

Switch sales are really low (stock issues) but, the PS5 has been selling much better as well.

Ex. The PS5 only recorded 60K+ sales per week 3 times from launch to Jan 2023. They've already surpassed that in the first few weeks of 2023.

But yeah, always been a thing, and in other times/places much more severe. Being on the "wrong side" of an idea could see you in exile, torture, or have your life "cancelled".

Modern Japan, just like anywhere else, has their own form of cancel culture. May not reflect the west, may not revolve around the same issues, but it's there.

It always comes down to mob mentality, tribal shit. Social media is just another extension of that. Existed long before Twitter and will continue to exist after Twitter is long forgotten.

As with many things regarding social media, it's not so much that people changed, these platforms just give certain behaviors, beliefs, and issues far more visibility.

With this movement if PS5 can hold the 50k baseline easily beat last year full year by around early may.

Not only that, The Switch was meant to take on PS4, not PS5 anyway. Seeing PS5 coming on top of Japan isn't that all surprising. This is proof Nintendo needs to announce their next-gen console. If not now, then when?

Our local sheep were celebrating the Switch destroying the ps5 in japan, saying how the average Japanese gamer doesn't care about PS. So yes, it is about the Switch vs the PS5, and the PS5 is demolishing it when its possible to buy one.

This is cool and all. But like others have said, it should be about PS5 vs Xbox. Switch is old now and most everyone has one that wanted one. Once FFXVI releases, PS5 sales will soar.

I don’t think it really matters which gen you want to classify the Switch as. It clearly dominated over there regardless. Now that they all have their main system, the Switch, they are now looking to pick up a secondary system, which looks to be the PS5.
