We’re excited to announce that the online ID change feature on PSN is officially launching to all PlayStation 4 owners later today. You’ll also be able to change your online ID via a web browser, and that feature will also be available starting today. Thanks to all of you who participated in the beta preview program back in October/November and who gave us your feedback!

Source

Sounds like it is happening today.

Edit: Should probably read PSN name change vice PS4 but you get the point.

Below are some of the issues you may encounter. We expect major issues to occur only in a small number of games.

  • Your previous Online ID may remain visible to you and other players in some areas.
  • You may lose progress within games, including game saved data, leaderboard data, and progress towards Trophies.
  • Parts of your game and applications may not function properly both online and offline.
  • You may lose access to content (including paid-for content) that you may have acquired for your games including content like add-ons and virtual currency.

Looks great, thanks Sony

Well better late then never I guess but yikes at those issues though. I think I’ll just stick with my current ID name anyway.

It is great news for those who want to change their names. Only a handful of old games will cause problems. But honestly, who cares?

So what if you lose a game save or a $5 DLC? You should have beat those a long time ago lol.

Change your name as soon as possible and move on with life. Complainers finally got their wish. Take advantage of it.

LOOOOOL

Seriously though, did anyone expect anything else from Soooony. It seems every time they launch a new PSN "feature", they break something in a process.

PSN needs binned.

@FLOPPAGE_50: Why would you leave your region?

How is that Sony’s fault you left the country? Why don’t you just stay in the country you bought your PS4 in?

This is a desperate tiny minority complaint that effects a whopping 0.0000000000000001% of PS4 owners.

I am surprised that the online ID name change is a major issue. I thought that technological advances would made it a minor issue.

People do move countries. It's a minority, but your intelligence puts you in the same ballpark.

It only took Sony nearly 15 years to implement this feature after Xbox first implemented it.

Congratulations, cows! Better nearly 15 years late than never, I guess!

Sony finally releases the most often requested feature over the last decade, and it's half-assed and broke.

Lmao! Sony never ceases to amaze me with their ineptitude.

@babyjoker1221: yup. Tested it. Broken mess. Names are all taken or either they are unrecognized. Even some random letters put together are not available

I can see 1 man taking 100 user names for himself but using only 1. Sony needs to release the unused name for anyone to use

Even if you do manage to find an unused name and change your ID, the old ID remains tied to your account, and if you decide to revert back at any point in time you can.

So basically all those unused names tied to peoples accounts who change their ID, will never be able to be used by anyone else ever, even though they may never be used again by the original creator.

Xbox has had this feature fully fleshed out since last gen, how hard is it to allow people to change their name. PSN database must not be very cohesive if all of these problems arise from a simple name change, which would also explain why it’s so easy for peoples info to get stolen.

More than likely they have people’s info spread across different servers from different providers. PSN needs to be rebuilt from the ground up before it can actually be on par with xbl.

Only with Sony would this have potential issues. I changed my name, and I haven't had any issues with the games I've tested so far. Only issues I've had is my new name not showing up in messages, and not getting messages from a friend who also changed his name.

Whatever. I think it's stupid that two people can't have the same name. How crazy would it be if everyone in the history of the world needed to have a unique name? There's no justification for it. Almost everyone is forced to have bad usernames because of it. I'll just stick with the bad one I've got.
