In my opinion, the times of consoles being able to compete with PCs during the time of release are comming to an end. The expenses and risk is just too high for either Sony or MS to make any more unprofitable consoles. So my idea is that they'll simply use the existing tech (probably new illiterations of the Cell and PowerPC CPUs, a medium-end PC graphics chip and more RAM) which will provide for true 1080p visuals at 60 fps which should be enough for a few years. The games themselves will also be more or less sequels to existing franchises so expect more Halo, Gears of War, Uncharted and KillZone, with a new IP here and there. It's also very likely they'll focus more on "gimmicks" this time as a selling point.

That's the chip the Wii U will supposedly have. A derivate of it, but anyway.

I only want to see one thing next generation 720p and 60fps there is no need to aim for 1080p at all keep it standard 720p and 60fps and every thing will be grand...

So because Sony came out and actually said THEIR console will not, you say MS will not either

Why should they? They would only loose money on it. And the better graphics wouldn't sell it. They just need to improve their Kinect tech and market that as the next best thing.

Huh, like adding more enemies on screen, or larger scale? They should do both, but there will always be corridor games that focus on maxing the hardware with as little as possible on screen.

I know you meant well ... but your reading comprehension is absolutely abysmal if you think my post had anything to do any on screen activity...

to be more clear , new models = updated version of console.

PS3/360 to Crysis graphics next-gen would be fine.

Is that as big as the leap from PS2/XBOX to PS3/360?

So consoles will be priced at $300 again ? Will just have to wait and see how much the Wii U cost, if it over priced and sells for $400, look for both sony and MS to make a $400 console as well.

You won't see much difference but everything will be more higher res. 1080p @ 30 fps with 2/4x AA or 720p @ 60 fps with 2/4x AA.

all Im saying is that they should just release a newer version of the current consoles but with more features .... we have built in wi-fi already, the next step is 4G and perhaps maybe motion sensors built in to the console, that would be amazing no ?

I think there'll be a big difference ultimately, maybe not so much at launch, like how many people don't see much difference when a new gen first launches (I remember the "where's teh next gen" comments at the DOA4 screenshots for the 360). Remember that more time will have passed than usual too, 8 or 9 years. That will help, but maybe it won't be as big as the jump from last gen, but it's possible, and how could we measure such a thing?:P

except games wont make the most out of it for the next 2 generations if that. 1080p means one thing this generation simplistic games or lower quality in almost every area and the next generation bar the ps4 and next xbox being 1000 dollars a peice means they will not make the most out of 1080p either we will have to have lower frame rates, and lower quality in graphical termsto reach it.720p and lower should have been the standard this generation yet developers kept trying to push that and ended up either not reaching 720p at all or having to sacrafice in many other areas to reach that resolution.

As for points I can never tell with mystic since he usually posts single sentences that in my opinion dont make a point.

pretty much. Graphics at this point won't change things all that much ..... its not like 2D to 3D gaming.

AMD's road map has 10 TFlops target for notebooks.

$699 to $800 USD laptops with AMD Llano A8 Mobile 400 stream processors + Mobile Radeon HD 400/480 stream processors is already close to 1 TFlops.

I think people are underestimating how big the leap is going to be. This reminds me of when BF2 came out before next-gen consoles, when BF2 came out in 2005, it was graphics king because it blew away anything on PS2, Xbox, or Gamecube ever did. Now look at BF2, it doesn't stand a chance when put up next to Uncharted 2. BF2 ended up being the mid-way point between gens in terms of visuals. I have a feeling it'll be the same exact way with BF3's (PC) visuals. It'll be graphics king for now but when games start being specifically built for newer hardware (reference to PS4 & 720) then you'll see a even bigger leap.

I only want to see one thing next generation 720p and 60fps there is no need to aim for 1080p at all keep it standard 720p and 60fps and every thing will be grand...

That's some pretty low standards there. Especially considering I was gaming beyond that a decade ago on my PC.

If they come out with one now no but, IMO there is no need there isn't enough of a graphical leap to justify a new 360 or Ps. Yes games do look a bit better on a PC, but not enough to warrent new systems. When games start coming out that cannot be played on 360 and ps3 with graphics aside than it will be time for new systems.

No DX11, tessellation, 1080p, AA, realtime radiosity = no buy from me. Anything less would be incremental and not worth my hard earned money, might just skip till PS5 or xbox4.

We already know. When consoles finally start getting Crysis 1/Warhead and Metro level visuals though they're gonna crap their pants and claim how much better it looks than PC though. By that time, PC will already be far ahead again and Nintendo might have another console out at the rate Sony/MS are going.

I think that they will make a graphical jump, specifically microsoft, as they will want to introduce DX10 or 11 on their next console, and that set of API's alone will require a better video card, AND they bring huge jumps in graphics that DX9 cards can't handle. Add in improved physics and better cpu processing and you've got some damn nice looking games on the horizon. PC is leaps and bounds ahead of consoles right now, and most of the pc games are still limited by consolization.

that is to b e expected ,

i told you , you can only go so far with visuals, -and ms and sony have reached a peak , =photorealism ,

3d graphics , sony ps3 already handles that ,

---- whats really next is just more enemies on screen and things like the wii u ,

thats what will continue to drive the industry from here on out not graphics alone ,

this gen was proof , 50 m each for ps3 360 , while wii is near 90 thats almost 2x the competition sold,

and if we exclude people who own all 3 , theyd be less to ,

i own all 3 , , plus 3ds psp ds dsi dslite and all past gen consoles til 2600 all the poipular ones any way i dont have the tg16 sms or the jag and i dont have any intentions in getting the later two but if i managed to find a cheap sms id pick it up

just to have it ,

but ya , i dont care bout graphics i was fine with snes graphics to be honest, i still buy games for the said console today so why should i start caring now,

if the games fun its fun if it s boring its boring graphics cant help it

Technology advances very quickly and there's plenty of room for improvement in graphics. It would be disappointing if the only improvements were higher resolution and frame rates, and that's it until 2018-2020. It's a nice enhancement but it's nothing to write home about, like a generational jump. There'll also be things like even more polygons, better textures, more advanced effects with lighting, reflections, etc, better physics, etc.

Technology advances very quickly and there's plenty of room for improvement in graphics. It would be disappointing if the only improvements were higher resolution and frame rates, and that's it until 2018-2020. It's a nice enhancement but it's nothing to write home about, like a generational jump. There'll also be things like even more polygons, better textures, more advanced effects with lighting, reflections, etc, better physics, etc.

better texture and PA ...etc is taken for grandted, I thought their improvement comes by default.

Taken for granted, comes by default, well, it didn't really happen with the Wii. It seems some people have a different perception now. Yes it will be a huge upgrade considering higher res and all of the things I listed.

Graphics have a lot of ways to go but it won't look considerably different relative to the jump from other gens. The new graphical achievements that can be done with greater hardware are more subtle.
