it seems like after 2 years or so all ps3s are starting to break down. so many of my friends are on their second or third ps3 and mine is on the verge of breaking too. Anyone who still thinks the fail rate is 2-8% needs to open their eyes.

Hearsay, indeed, is not a great foundation for laying forth an argument. You need some factual proof to back up your assertion.

Quick math, let's assume only 1 million people own a PS3, 1,000,000 x 0.08 = 80,000. I am sure your friends + you could be within those 80,000

Just going from what I've heard in my school it seems to be only affecting those who bought a 60gb PS3. And the only way they could have one of those is if they are rich enough (or their parents are) to have got one around the launch time. Some of those people just chucked their old PS3 and bought new ones.

So you + your friends = everyone? How can you even come up with the PS3 having a higher failure rate than the Xbox 360 by only stating your own situation as an example?

Um...you and your friends having PS3 problems doesn't warrant the idea that the failure rate is "way higher than the 360". This is a defenseless argument against the PS3 because a few people decided to created a perceived, self-created pattern when all of them mysteriously stumbled upon the coincidence that they all had failing PS3 units. You should try moving back to the real world where patterns don't exist based on a small sample of coincidences that contradict the largest sample group.

Everyone I know says the same thing, that PS3's are crap. Everyone. You know, 3 of my friends at school and like the entire internet. All of it. Yeah. And they not only breakdown, but they explode. And cause cancer. PS3s also have offensive political and religious affiliations. Thats why the 360 is like totally awesome.

Yeah mines won't play PS2 games anymore, they always freeze at the title screen, but it still plays PS1/3 games and DVD movies perfectly.

Nah, not really, but broken PS3s can be repaired one time.... the 360s are pretty much unrepairable, fixed and they are still problems.

like most things i blame the chance of any failure down to sheer luck and a lack of common sense.

Dont think they are higher out of all my friends i am the only person to have a PS3 YLOD on me and about 60% of my friends own PS3s.

I doubt it is higher then the 360 failure rate, but I am fairly certain that it IS somewhat high

In truth I do suspect alot of the meltdowns on both consoles are caused by users neclecting them, this gen of consoles is very different then the old timers, they require alot of air intake, and do not tolerate dust at all.

So you're telling us we should ignore factual information and believe that the failure rate is way higher because you and your friends' consoles seem they are close to broken...

Out of all the people that i know that own either a PS3, 360 or Wii, more have had problems with the Wii.

Does that mean the Wii has a higher failure rate than the 360 :o

just a helpful hint, never go by what's on the forums. The reason why X360 fail rate become a hot topic was because retailers and the companies that fix the console came out and said there was a big problem with X360. You are always going to have people complaining about broken electronics but the key are the people who see the returns and they know if their is a serious problem when they can't get it repaired. The moment that their companies said they were going to refund their customers warrenties for the X360, you knew there was a serious problem they couldn't fix. I don't see that for the PS3 at all.

Quite the other way around. I barely see threads about YLOD except threads like these that have now research or polls backing up the claim.

Well i don't see this happening and the fail rate surely isn't higher then the 360. I guess from your logic that because i've had a 360 fail and have yet to have a PS3 fail and that i've seen forums/videos/pics on the net that the 360 has a much higher fail rate. Poor kid.

I've never had prob with my N64, PSone, PS2, GBA SP, GC, PS3 & WII so that means their failure rate is 0%! :o

The only prob I had on my PS3 slim was Midnight Club freezing after a race. That's pretty much it.

I've never heard from someone, in real life, of a PS3 breaking.

My main group of friends is six kids (All with 360s), and they have all gone through atleast 2 systems. One of them on his 6th (Atleast he claims).

owned! RROD has become so common that nobody talks about it anymore... it just exists, you learn to live with it. ylod is really rare (at least in my experience with friends, family and my ps3) in the other hand. so when it happens everyone talks about it.

My 80 GB went to the Dr after 1 year and 3 months of loyal service. Bluray drive stopped working. The system itself was still playing digital games. Sony fixed it for free and sent me a new 80 GB. That was a year ago and I haven't had any problems since.

My xbox RROD'd twice before i sold it.

My 360 has broken once coming up on 2 years ago. My friends ps3 has technicaly broken twice, the first is when he got home with his brand new ps3 and it never powered on at all, the second store exchanged one stopped reading disks about a month ago. The difference between his broken ps3 and my broken 360 is mine was repaired for free, while he now has a brick of a sony product =) im not sure if he will ever fix it, hes not way into games and only has his ps3 for gta, fifa, and blue rays. O and this is just my personal experience, i dont think the ps3, on average, bricks more than the 360.

I don't think the failure rate is high, the 360 has a huge problem with RROD but the PS3 has a wide array of assorted problems. Mines been acting up as of late, maybe its cause of the MAG beta, you never know.

My PS3 died last night. I just got done watching a blu ray movie and ejected it so luckily nothing is in the drive. After playing some music on the hard drive for about 30 minutes all of a sudden the PS3 just shut off. YLOD! The PS3 immediately lost connectivity to the controllers. Now when I hit the power button it goes green, then quickly to yellow, then quickly to a flashing red accompanied by three beeps. Holding down the power button does nothing. There are videos of this on youtube that show exactly what is happening to me right now:

Video Showing PS3 YLOD

I have a launch 60gb I got on December 8th of 2006. It lasted almost 3 years and 1 month to the day. I tried to swap back to my old hard drive (changed it out last week for a new 500gb Seagate Momentus that was working gloriously) but that didn't change anything, tried to start it up without the hard drive in it (a rumored possible fix) and that did nothing. It looks like the only way to fix it is to take apart the PS3 and run a heat gun over the CPU and GPU for a few minutes to fix the ruined solder connections. Of course this voids any warranty and makes any deal between Sony and myself for replacement void. All in all I am VERY disappointed that my $600 PS3 is now broken (I just got MW2 and Assassins Creed 2) but I have to admit there is no other machine I use more than it. This is an understandable risk taken when buying a launch console.

When it comes down to Sony support, I did call Sony and they gave me 2 options. Send in my broken 60gb Ps3 and pay $149 to fix it as well as $29 to ship. This means I will get my 60gb back. OR, I can send in my broken 60gb and trade it out for a 120gb PS3 slim. This will cost me $119 plus $29 to ship. I'm not comfortable paying $178 for them to disassemble my PS3 so they can fix the connections around the GPU and CPU. To me that seems a bit overpriced. On the other hand, if I do trade it out for a PS3 slim I only get a 90 day warranty according to customer support. This means after a few months I could easily be in the same situation. My last option is to pay about $300 (which I would have to save up for) and get a new PS3 slim and an extended warranty from the store I purchase it from.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Hearsay, indeed, is not a great foundation for laying forth an argument. You need some factual proof to back up your assertion.Stevo_the_gamer
it's actually 10% according to GS, personally i doubt it's that high, but i am suspicious of the slim, the PS3 actually runs hotter than the 360, it uses more power, but the colling system in it was super efficient, the slim model doesn't have the same cooling system

Lol, so how can 'religion' still exist by this manor? Apparently, hearsay IS valid as evidence, based on the fact that religion exists as 'fact' mwahahaha! Anyways, yes i've heard other people have had theirs break too. If this is true, i'm guessing that the power needed for todays graphics just overheats the hardware... still require larger properly cooled cases i guess.
